Application of compositional data analysis to determine the effects of heating mode, moisture status and plant species on pyrolysates

David R. Weise et al.

Summary: Pyrolysate gas mixtures are complex and relative in nature, with statistical analysis techniques often overlooking this relative aspect. Compositional data analysis techniques were used to reanalyze data on gases and tars produced from pyrolysing wildland fuels, revealing the influence of plant species, moisture status, and heating modes on compositional balances. These factors affect the relative amounts of different compounds in the pyrolysates.

Pyrolysis kinetics of wildland vegetation using model-fitting methods

Elham Amini et al.

Summary: This study conducted slow-heating pyrolysis experiments on 14 plant species native to forests in the southern United States, and determined single kinetic parameters using model-fitting methods. The multiple-reaction DAE model gave the best fit to the pyrolysis data at multiple heating rates where multiple peaks were observed. The findings suggest that hemicellulose and extractives decompose more readily than cellulose and lignin in the pyrolysis process.

Dynamic infrared gas analysis from longleaf pine fuel beds burned in a wind tunnel: observation of phenol in pyrolysis and combustion phases

Catherine A. Banach et al.

Summary: This study uses a new time-resolved FTIR method to correlate measured FTIR spectra with an infrared thermal image sequence for the identification and quantification of gases in different phases of the fire process. The flame from burning fuel beds serves as the natural heat source for pyrolysis. Phenol emissions were identified for the first time associated with both pre-combustion and combustion phases.
