Modelling the water injection induced fault slip and its application to in-situ stress estimation

Wenjie Shiu et al.

Summary: The study evaluates fault reactivation caused by water injection in the context of nuclear waste disposal design. A model utilizing the distinct element method is used to replicate fault reactivation in an experiment conducted at the Mont Terri Underground Research Laboratory in Switzerland. The simulations demonstrate that shear stress and frictional resistance are the primary factors affecting fault slip, with reversible opening in the normal direction occurring at low pressure and shear displacement from shear slip at high pressure. Additionally, the study shows that a coupled numerical analysis of rock displacement and fluid pressure allows for the estimation of principal stresses in-situ.

Investigating models to represent gas transport in a swelling geomaterial

Elias Ernest Dagher et al.

Summary: This study proposes a mathematical hydro-mechanical model for gas migration in a low-permeable heterogenous swelling geomaterial, evaluating three stress-strain constitutive models. Using the Finite Element Method, the models were validated against experimental results for a confined cylindrical sample of near-saturated bentonite. The study provides insights into the use of highly coupled HM models and their capabilities in representing multi-phase flow in swelling geomaterials.

Fracture transmissivity evolution around the geological repository of nuclear waste caused by the excavation damage zone, thermoshearing and glaciation

Saeha Kwon et al.

Summary: This paper presents numerical simulations on fracture transmissivity changes caused by excavation damage zone, thermal loading, and glaciation during the lifetime of a geological repository. The study shows that stress re-distribution after excavation, followed by thermal and glacial loadings, can lead to irreversible increase in fracture transmissivity.

Feasibility of constructing a full-scale radioactive high-level waste disposal cell and characterization of its thermo-hydro-mechanical behavior

Frederic Bumbieler et al.

Summary: The French National Radioactive Waste Management Agency (Andra) is conducting a research program at the Meuse/HauteMarne Underground Research Laboratory (MHM URL) to demonstrate the feasibility of constructing and operating a High Level Waste (HLW) disposal facility in the Callovo-Oxfordian (COx) claystone formation. The ALC1604 experiment is an in-situ heating test replicating a full-scale HLW disposal cell, studying the response of the cell and the surrounding rock under thermal loading. The lessons learned from this experiment have provided valuable feedback towards implementing new fullscale heating experiments consistent with a new benchmark concept.

Z. Michalec et al.

Summary: The paper presents a mathematical model for analyzing coupled thermohydro-mechanical processes in bentonite and bentonite-based sealing barriers in deep geological repositories. The model uses standard test data and attempts to incorporate special characteristics of bentonite behavior, which is crucial for understanding the long-term performance of barriers. Inverse hydraulic and transport model of groundwater recovery experiment using mixed-dimensional concept

Milan Hokr et al.

Summary: The study observed initial perturbations and recovery of groundwater after tunnel closure in Mizunami, Japan at 500-m depth in granite. Groundwater pressures and chemical composition were monitored in boreholes with numerical modeling to better understand water flow and solute transport phenomena. The inverse hydraulic model fitted communicating sections and estimated transmissivity and conductivity parameters consistently for two phases, but sensitivity on transport parameters was insufficient for the inverse model, which used only simplified measured evolution to avoid noisy data.
