Microstructure and wear characteristics of in-situ micro/nanoscale niobium carbide reinforced copper composites fabricated through powder metallurgy

Yu Bian et al.

Summary: The highly wear-resistant copper matrix composite reinforced by in situ formed nano-NbC particles shows significantly lower friction coefficient and wear rate compared to micro-NbC reinforced copper composites. The improvement in wear resistance is attributed to the hardness enhancement and solid lubricating effects induced by nanoscale niobium carbides/oxides as well as iron oxides. The oxidation and pulverization of NbC during friction play a key role in increasing the wear resistance.

Nano/ultrafine grained immiscible Fe-Cu alloy with ultrahigh strength produced by selective laser melting

A. Zafari et al.

Summary: A nano/ultrafine grained immiscible Fe-Cu alloy with Cu particles of 5 nm in size and 10 nm in spacing was produced by SLM, leading to an ultrahigh strength material. The significant increase in yield strength from approximately 400 MPa in SLM-fabricated Fe to approximately 900 MPa in Fe-Cu was attributed to dispersion strengthening and grain boundary strengthening.

Fabrication of a TiC-Ti Matrix Composite Coating Using Ultrasonic Vibration-Assisted Laser Directed Energy Deposition: The Effects of Ultrasonic Vibration and TiC Content

Yunze Li et al.

Summary: Titanium and its alloys have excellent properties, but their relatively low hardness and wear resistance limit their service life in high-performance applications. The fabrication of a ceramic reinforced titanium matrix composite coating can enhance microhardness and wear resistance. Ultrasonic vibration can reduce TiC aggregation, decrease porosity, reduce defects in the bonding interface, and increase mechanical properties.

Electrochemical noise analysis of cavitation erosion corrosion resistance of NbC nanocrystalline coating in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution

Shuang Peng et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the NbC coating exhibited better cavitation erosion-corrosion resistance compared to the Ti-6Al-4V alloy, with the noise resistance and slope values of the NbC coating remaining almost constant regardless of the output power. The charge of the corrosion event and the total energy of the d series crystals for the NbC coating were significantly lower than that of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy, indicating a high propensity of pitting corrosion for the alloy.

Microstructure and Wear Behavior of NbC-Reinforced Ni-Based Alloy Composite Coatings by Laser Cladding

Alex Pizzatto et al.

Summary: This work evaluates the influence of laser power and reinforcement feeding rate on the microstructure, hardness, and wear behavior of NbC-reinforced Hastelloy C276TM alloy composite coatings. The study found that laser power and NbC feeding rate significantly impacted the coating's microstructure, hardness, and wear performance. Higher reinforcement feeding rates resulted in higher carbide fractions and improved wear performance of low heat-input specimens.

Microstructural Properties of Fe-Cr-C/NbC Composite Coating Produced on Medium Carbon Steel Surface by TIG Coating Process

Gul Tosun et al.

Summary: The study found that Fe-based composite coatings were produced on medium carbon steel surface using the Tungsten inert gas method, with sufficient energy input resulting in a metallurgical bond to the substrate. In the microstructure, hexagonal M7C3 carbides solidified in gamma-(Fe,Cr) matrix in Fe-Cr-C coatings, while quadrangular NbC carbides solidified in Fe-Cr-C/NbC composite coatings, with the amount of NbC increasing with the melted FeNb amount increasing.
