Effect of aspect ratio on flow boiling characteristics in microchannels

Ali H. Al-Zaidi et al.

Summary: The study experimentally investigated the influence of channel aspect ratio on flow boiling characteristics of HFE-7100 in copper multi-microchannel heat sinks. It found that increasing channel aspect ratio led to higher heat transfer coefficient and lower flow boiling pressure drop, but the heat transfer rate was higher in the heat sink with the smallest aspect ratio due to its larger surface area.

Inertial and buoyancy effects on the flow of elongated bubbles in horizontal channels

H. R. Moran et al.

Summary: In a horizontal liquid-filled channel with a long gas bubble, a liquid film forms between the bubble and the channel wall. Factors such as buoyancy, capillary, and Reynolds numbers affect the bubble's shape, inclination, and liquid film thickness. Buoyancy lifts the bubble, making the top film thinner and the bottom film thicker, with the bottom meniscus flattening as the Bond number approaches unity.

Non-unique bubble dynamics in a vertical capillary with an external flow

Yingxian Estella Yu et al.

Summary: The research systematically studies the motion of bubbles in a vertical capillary tube under external flows, revealing diverse dynamic phenomena when an external downward flow is applied to the bubble. The study discovers the existence of two distinct solution branches for the film thickness separating the bubble surface and the tube inner wall, as well as non-unique, history-dependent solutions for the steady-state film thickness under the same external flow conditions. Furthermore, inertialess symmetry-breaking shape profiles at steady state are found as the bubble transits near the tipping points of the solution branches, which are verified in experiments and numerical simulations.

Computational Study of the Dynamics of the Taylor Bubble

Evgenii L. Sharaborin et al.

Summary: In this study, high-resolution numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the three-dimensional dynamics of an elongated bubble in a microchannel at moderate Reynolds numbers. The new results were validated with experimental data and extended to regimes with significant inertia. Various dynamical features, such as frequencies and wavelengths of bubble surface undulations and vortical structures in the flow, were analyzed.
