Light-promoted synthesis of surface-grafted polymers bearing pyridine groups by metal-free ATRP in microliter volumes

Monika Slowikowska et al.

Summary: This study presents a facile synthetic strategy to obtain pH-responsive polymers with pendant pyridine groups using light-mediated metal-free surface-initiated ATRP. The optimal monomer structure for thick brush formation was selected through comparison of isomeric monomers reactivity. The controlled characteristics of the developed method were demonstrated by linear dependency of brush thickness vs polymerization time for poly(pyridin-3-yl methacrylate) (PP3M) grafted from indium tin oxide or silicon wafers.

FRET-Integrated Polymer Brushes for Spatially Resolved Sensing of Changes in Polymer Conformation

Quinn A. Besford et al.

Summary: Polymer brush surfaces that can alter their physical properties in response to chemical stimuli have potential as new surface-based sensing materials. This study reports on ultrathin polymer brush surfaces integrated with FRET technology for optical sensing of changes in liquid mixture compositions, with high spatial resolution. The sensitivity and real-time sensing capabilities of these brush surfaces make them promising for enhanced surface-based sensing at complex interfaces.
