Enhancing chalcogen bonding by metal coordination

Rosa M. Gomila et al.

Summary: This manuscript demonstrates the enhancement of chalcogen bonding interactions by coordinating chalcogen atoms to metal centers. The findings are supported by DFT calculations and X-ray structures, showing the crucial role of the newly generated sigma-hole in solid state.

Anion Anion Coinage Bonds: The Case of Tetrachloridoaurate

Andrea Daolio et al.

Summary: Interactions in crystalline tetrachloridoaurates of acetylcholine and dimethylpropiothetine are characterized by short contacts of Au Cl and Au O. The attractive nature of the Au Cl/O interactions complements the known aurophilic bonds involved in gold-centered interactions. Computational studies show that gold atoms in negatively charged species can function as electron density acceptors.

Molecular Electrostatic Potential and Noncovalent Interactions in Derivatives of Group 8 Elements

Andrea Daolio et al.

Summary: This study provides experimental and theoretical evidence of sigma-hole interactions in adducts between nitrogen or oxygen nucleophiles and tetroxides of osmium or other group 8 elements. The cocrystals between pyridine or pyridine N-oxide derivatives and osmium tetroxide were characterized and rationalized as sigma-hole interactions using various computational tools. The term "osme bond" is proposed to name the noncovalent interactions where group 8 elements serve as electrophiles.

Anion...Anion Interactions Involving σ-Holes of Perrhenate, Pertechnetate and Permanganate Anions

Andrea Daolio et al.

Summary: Experimental and theoretical evidence suggests that interactions between electron rich atoms and tetroxide anions of group 7 elements involve a new type of attractive sigma-hole interactions, leading to the formation of supramolecular anionic dimers or polymers. These interactions are categorized as matere bonds (MaB) and distinguished from classical metal-ligand coordination bonds.

Metal-Involving Chalcogen Bond. The Case of Platinum(II) Interaction with Se/Te-Based sigma-Hole Donors

Anton Rozhkov et al.

Summary: Platinum(II) complexes with expressed d(z)(2)-nucleophilicity of positively charged metal centers were cocrystallized with chalcogen bond donors to form two isostructural cocrystals. The interaction modes between chalcogen atoms (sulfur and tellurium) and the metal center were studied, revealing different bonding characteristics in the two cocrystals. The association of one of the cocrystals with a chalcogen bond donor was further investigated using NMR and calorimetry methods, confirming a 1:1 association between them.

Bifurcated Halogen Bonding Involving Two Rhodium(I) Centers as an Integrated σ-Hole Acceptor

Anastasiya A. Eliseeva et al.

Summary: The complexes [RhX(COD)](2) can form cocrystals with sigma-hole iodine donors through the nucleophilicity of the d(z)(2)-orbitals of two positively charged rhodium(I) centers. X-ray diffraction studies and theoretical considerations suggest that the two metal centers act as an integrated XB acceptor, providing assembly via a metal-involving XB.

Crystal engineering strategies towards halogen-bonded metal-organic multi-component solids: salts, cocrystals and salt cocrystals

Vinko Nemec et al.

Summary: The paper provides an overview of recent advances in the preparation of halogen-bonded metal-organic multi-component solids, including single-component metal-organic solids and metallate salts with halogen bonding, as well as cocrystals with neutral and ionic constituents. Additionally, the article outlines general design strategies that can be used in designing such materials and suggests possible directions for future research in this field.
