Neuroprotective effect of hypoxic preconditioning and neuronal activation in a in vitro human model of the ischemic penumbra

Sara Pires Monteiro et al.

Summary: The study established a human neuronal model of the ischemic penumbra and found that human neuronal networks are vulnerable to hypoxia, which may lead to irreversible impairments if a critical time threshold is crossed. Hypoxic preconditioning can improve resistance to a second hypoxic insult. Additionally, stimulatory treatments targeting neuronal silencing during hypoxia, such as optogenetic stimulation, were found to be neuroprotective in contrast to previously ineffective treatments.
