Vm-milR37 contributes to pathogenicity by regulating glutathione peroxidase gene VmGP in Valsa mali

Hao Feng et al.

Summary: This study identified a milRNA (Vm-milR37) from Valsa mali, which plays a critical role in pathogenicity by regulating the expression of VmGP during the oxidative stress response in V. mali infection. Overexpression of Vm-milR37 significantly decreased pathogenicity, while deletion of VmGP had a noticeable impact on pathogenicity.

Summary: A new method utilizing laser treatment for the delivery of dsRNA to citrus leaves allows for the rapid observation of gene function and phenotype response, which is systemic and indicates the movement of RNA within plants. This technique provides a faster and more specific tool for studying gene function in higher plants and trees.

Minicell-based fungal RNAi delivery for sustainable crop protection

Md Tabibul Islam et al.

Summary: The use of Escherichia coli-derived anucleated minicells as a platform for dsRNA production and encapsulation enhances the efficacy of spray-induced gene silencing (SIGS) against phytopathogenic fungi. Encapsulated dsRNA shows prolonged persistence on strawberry surfaces and significant inhibition of fungal growth in vitro, offering a potential commercial application for RNAi-based biocontrols. The compensatory relationship between DICER-like gene transcripts and the ability of minicell-encapsulated dsRNAs to halt disease progression in strawberries for an extended period demonstrate the scalability and efficacy of this approach.

Physiological Conditions and dsRNA Application Approaches for Exogenously induced RNA Interference in Arabidopsis thaliana

Konstantin Kiselev et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that foliar application of dsRNA or siRNA can trigger RNAi-mediated silencing of specific genes in plant pathogens. However, the efficiency of gene silencing can be influenced by physiological conditions, plant age, time of day, and soil moisture. Optimal conditions for exogenously induced gene silencing in Arabidopsis thaliana include late application of dsRNA at night, low soil moisture, and specific application methods like brushing, spraying, and pipetting.

Host-induced gene silencing - mechanisms and applications

Aline Koch et al.

Summary: Host-induced gene silencing (HIGS) technology is a powerful alternative for plant protection, but its efficacy and specificity require more fundamental knowledge on molecular mechanisms. Contributions of host and target RNA interference machineries may be incompatible, and closing knowledge gaps will lead to novel concepts, precise risk assessment, and tailor-made HIGS therapy for plant diseases.

Spray-induced gene silencing for disease control is dependent on the efficiency of pathogen RNA uptake

Lulu Qiao et al.

Summary: Recent discoveries show that fungi can uptake environmental RNA to silence fungal genes through RNA interference, leading to the development of Spray-Induced Gene Silencing (SIGS) for plant disease management. The efficiency of RNA uptake varies across eukaryotic microbe species and cell types, which plays a critical role in determining the success of SIGS for plant disease management.
