A potent HDAC inhibitor blocks Toxoplasma gondii tachyzoite growth and profoundly disrupts parasite gene expression

Thomas Mouveaux et al.

Summary: This study identified a potent HDAC inhibitor compound, MC1742, which showed activity in inhibiting the growth of Toxoplasma gondii in vitro and preventing the consequences of the acute disease in vivo. The compound induced hyper-acetylation of histones and changed the parasite's gene expression program, leading to parasite death.

Behavioral Manipulation by Toxoplasma gondi: Does Brain Residence Matter?

Samira Abdulai-Saiku et al.

Summary: This article discusses the behavioral manipulation mechanism of Toxoplasma gondii on intermediate hosts, proposing the role of gonadal steroids in this process. The presence of tissue cysts in the host brain is considered merely a side effect of behavioral change, rather than a necessary or sufficient factor.

HDAC inhibitors Tubastatin A and SAHA affect parasite cell division and are potential anti-Toxoplasma gondii chemotherapeutics

Carlla Assis Araujo-Silva et al.

Summary: The redirection of drugs in the pharmaceutical market is a well-known practice to identify new therapies for parasitic diseases. Tubastatin A (TST) and Suberoylanilide Hydroxamic Acid (SAHA), originally developed for cancer treatment, have shown high selectivity and strong anti-proliferative effects against Toxoplasma gondii, making them potential lead compounds for future development of anti-Toxoplasma molecules.
