The small GTPase RABA2a recruits SNARE proteins to regulate the secretory pathway in parallel with the exocyst complex in Arabidopsis

Lei Pang et al.

Summary: Delivery of proteins to the plasma membrane in plants involves the RABA2a-SNARE pathway, which is independent of the exocyst-mediated secretion pathway. This plant-specific pathway is essential for maintaining potassium homeostasis in Arabidopsis seedlings and may have evolved as a response to environmental changes.

CYP81A68 confers metabolic resistance to ALS and ACCase-inhibiting herbicides and its epigenetic regulation in Echinochloa crus-galli

Lang Pan et al.

Summary: Long-term and excessive herbicide use has led to the evolution of herbicide resistance in weeds. This study confirmed the resistance of a global weed population, Echinochloa crus-galli, to ALS-inhibiting herbicide penoxsulam and ACCase-inhibiting herbicides cyhalofop-butyl and metamifop. The resistance was found to be due to the higher expression of a cytochrome P450 gene, CYP81A68, and enhanced metabolism via O-demethylation. Epigenetic regulation, specifically differential methylation of CpG islands, was also observed between resistant and susceptible populations. This research highlights the importance of alternative herbicide selection and nonchemical control tactics in reducing environmental impacts.

CytochromeP450-mediated herbicide metabolism in plants: current understanding and prospects

Nina Gracel Dimaano et al.

Summary: Cytochrome P450s (P450s) play a key role in herbicide metabolism research, providing selectivity in crops and resistance in weeds. While diverse plant P450s with herbicide-metabolizing functions have been identified, fully exploring their potential in crop improvement and herbicide resistance mitigation remains challenging due to the complexity of their function and regulation. Comparing substrate specificity and protein structures of P450s may lead to the development of selective herbicides and crops with higher herbicide tolerance.

Cytochrome P450 CYP81A10v7 in Lolium rigidum confers metabolic resistance to herbicides across at least five modes of action

Heping Han et al.

Summary: The rapid evolution of multiple herbicide resistance in global weed species, especially through metabolic resistance, poses a major threat to herbicide sustainability and global food production. A study found that a P450 gene in Lolium rigidum confers resistance to at least five modes of action across seven herbicide chemistries, indicating a wide cross-resistance profile to many dissimilar herbicides in transgenic plants.

Non-target-Site Resistance in Lolium spp. Globally: A Review

Andreia K. Suzukawa et al.

Summary: The Lolium genus includes several important plants that are of particular interest to weed scientists due to their ability to thrive in both agricultural and non-agricultural environments, and have evolved resistance to multiple herbicide mechanisms. This review summarizes the current knowledge on non-target-site resistance in Lolium spp. to various herbicide mechanisms and suggests further research topics and strategies to enhance our understanding of resistance mechanisms.

Integrating Transcriptome and Coexpression Network Analyses to Characterize Salicylic Acid- and Jasmonic Acid-Related Genes in Tolerant Poplars Infected with Rust

Qiaoli Chen et al.

Summary: Tolerant poplars exhibit coordinated regulation of SA and JA pathways in response to infection by Melampsora larici-populina, leading to activation of defence responses and limiting pathogen growth. In contrast, intolerant poplar shows inhibition of SA-related defence signalling and continued inhibition of plant-pathogen interaction-related genes by increasing JA levels, highlighting the importance of timely activation or inhibition of SA and JA pathways in determining plant tolerance to rust diseases.

Investigating the Mechanism of Metabolic Resistance to Tribenuron-Methyl in Capsella bursa-pastoris (L.) Medik. by Full-Length Transcriptome Assembly Combined with RNA-Seq

Xiaolin Zhang et al.

Summary: Capsella bursa-pastoris has evolved resistance to ALS-inhibiting herbicides, and inhibiting cytochrome P450 monooxygenase can reduce the resistance. Resistant plants have higher GST activity and increased metabolism of tribenuron-methyl, and differential gene expression analysis identified several genes potentially involved in non-target metabolic resistance.

CYP77B1 a fatty acid epoxygenase specific to flowering plants

Emmanuelle Pineau et al.

Summary: Data mining led to the identification and characterization of a new fatty acid epoxygenase in Arabidopsis thaliana, named CYP77B1, capable of converting plant fatty acids into specific diols. The enzyme showed highest expression in flower bud and was mainly present in pistil during open flower stage. The study also suggested a specific function of CYP77B1 in flowering plants based on phylogenetic analysis.
