Innate immunity drives pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis

Maria Edilova et al.

Summary: Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease affecting about 1% of the population, with genetic and environmental factors playing key roles in its pathogenesis. While early studies focused on lymphocytes, recent research has highlighted the critical involvement of innate immune cells in the onset and progression of RA. Therapeutic approaches targeting different inflammatory pathways and immune cells, including the emerging roles of innate lymphoid cells and inflammasomes, are being explored for the treatment of RA.

Molecular mechanisms and physiological functions of mitophagy

Mashun Onishi et al.

Summary: Mitophagy is a fundamental cellular mechanism for degrading mitochondria, regulated by specific receptors or ubiquitin molecules. Its dysfunction is associated with various pathological conditions, highlighting its biological significance in maintaining cellular homeostasis.

PINK1 deficiency impairs adult neurogenesis of dopaminergic neurons

Sarah J. Brown et al.

Summary: Recent evidence suggests that neurogenesis continues throughout life but the impact on neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson's disease is still unclear. Studies in zebrafish and human organoids show that PINK1 deficiency impairs adult dopaminergic neurogenesis, potentially affecting future therapeutic approaches for PD patients with biallelic PINK1 mutations.
