European Association of Urology Guidelines on Upper Urinary Tract Urothelial Carcinoma: 2020 Update

Morgan Roupret et al.

Summary: The updated EAU guidelines on UTUC aim to assist clinicians in evidence-based management, providing recommendations on diagnosis, risk stratification, radical and conservative treatment, and prognostic factors. Due to the rarity of UTUC, there is insufficient data to provide strong recommendations. Recommendations are based on the 2017 TNM classification and emphasize individualized treatment based on proposed risk stratification.

The clinicopathological characteristics of muscle-invasive bladder recurrence in upper tract urothelial carcinoma

Keisuke Shigeta et al.

Summary: This study aimed to clarify the clinical characteristics and oncological outcomes of patients with UTUC who developed MIBC after RNU. The study identified risk factors for MIBC progression after initial IVR and compared outcomes with primary MIBC patients. Molecular analysis revealed differences in FGFR3 and p53 expression between UTUC and primary MIBC, with UTUC patients exhibiting more favorable outcomes after developing MIBC.

Co-expression of fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 with mutant p53, and its association with worse outcome in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma

Sreenivas Nannapaneni et al.

Summary: FGFR3 expression in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma is associated with p16 negative status and mp53 expression, correlating with a worse clinical outcome. Further investigation into the biological relationship between FGFR3 and mp53 in OPSCC is warranted.

Pparg signaling controls bladder cancer subtype and immune exclusion

Tiffany Tate et al.

Summary: The differential expression of PPARg in bladder cancer subtypes plays a crucial role in tumor formation and progression. The activation of Pparg in basal bladder cells can prevent tumor formation but injury-induced differentiation of these cells into luminal cells can lead to tumor development. Understanding the molecular mechanisms behind subtype transition provides important insights for the diagnosis and treatment of bladder cancer.

Expression Analysis of Same-Patient Metachronous and Synchronous Upper Tract and Bladder Urothelial Carcinoma

Firas G. Petros et al.

Summary: This study compared different types of urothelial carcinoma in the same patient and found that differences in gene expression may be associated with pathological features. Metachronous tumors largely maintained the molecular subtype membership of the initial tumor.
