Gigantic Genomes Provide Empirical Tests of Transposable Element Dynamics Models

Jie Wang et al.

Summary: Transposable elements (TEs) play a major role in determining eukaryotic genome size, with their collective properties reflecting the evolutionary dynamics of TE/host interactions. The amphibian caecilian Ichthyophis bannanicus, with its giant genome size, exhibits unique TE landscape composition compared to other giant amphibians, but shares similarities in ectopic recombination-mediated deletion rate. TE activity in the caecilian is characterized by high somatic transcription levels, suggesting active TE superfamilies. Comparing TE diversity across vertebrates of varying genome sizes highlights the importance of thorough TE characterization for future comparative analyses, with potential implications for understanding shared features of TE/host genome evolutionary dynamics in convergent gigantic genomes.

Summary: The European hazelnut is an important tree nut with highly heterozygous individuals due to sporophytic incompatibility. The TGdL cultivar is well-known for its high kernel quality, providing an economic benefit for producers. The genome sequence of TGdL is a powerful tool for understanding hazelnut genetics and identifying markers/genes for breeding programs.

Comprehensive Characterization and Validation of Chromosome-Specific Highly Polymorphic SSR Markers From Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) cv. Tunisia Genome

Prakash Goudappa Patil et al.

Summary: The SSR survey of the 'Tunisia' genome identified a large number of perfect SSRs, with a positive trend between chromosome length and SSR abundance. The distribution of SSR motif types within chromosomes showed hexanucleotide repeats to be the most abundant. Through designing a set of highly polymorphic genome-wide SSRs, this study will be valuable for genetic studies, germplasm management, and genomics-assisted breeding in pomegranate.
