Endothelial arginase 2 mediates retinal ischemia/reperfusion injury by inducing mitochondrial dysfunction

Esraa Shosha et al.

Summary: Retinal ischemic disease is a major cause of vision loss, and alterations in mitochondrial dynamics and function mediated by A2 in endothelial cells play a crucial role in protecting against neurovascular injury.

Real-Time Monitoring the Effect of Cytopathic Hypoxia on Retinal Pigment Epithelial Barrier Functionality Using Electric Cell-Substrate Impedance Sensing (ECIS) Biosensor Technology

Michael H. Guerra et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of cytopathic hypoxia on the barrier functionality of RPE cells through ECIS system and seahorse technology, revealing a dose-dependent reduction in total impedance of ARPE-19 cells by CoCl2 treatment. Furthermore, CoCl2 significantly impaired mitochondrial function and decreased expression of ZO-1, a major paracellular tight junction protein, in ARPE-19 cells.

Relative Contribution of Different Mitochondrial Oxidative Phosphorylation Components to the Retinal Pigment Epithelium Barrier Function: Implications for RPE-Related Retinal Diseases

Michael H. Guerra et al.

Summary: The disruption of retinal pigment epithelial barrier integrity is involved in several blinding retinal diseases. Mitochondrial dysfunction, particularly OxPhos uncoupling, plays a major role in disrupting the barrier function. Identifying the differential roles of mitochondrial components can aid in developing therapeutic approaches for RPE-related retinal diseases.
