Comparative genomics and evolutionary analysis of Lactococcus garvieae isolated from human endocarditis

Carlos Frances-Cuesta et al.

Summary: Lactococcus garvieae is a well-known pathogen in fish and rarely causes infections in humans and other mammals. This study presents the complete genomic sequence of a clinical L. garvieae strain and compares it with other genomes. The results show that L. garvieae is a highly recombinogenic species with horizontal gene transfers comprising nearly 30% of its genome.

Identification of Potential Probiotics Producing Bacteriocins Active against Listeria monocytogenes by a Combination of Screening Tools

Christian K. Desiderato et al.

Summary: Listeria monocytogenes is a significant concern in the food industry and bacteriocins from LAB are an attractive approach for food preservation and probiotics. This study used genetic sequencing and screening to identify bacterial isolates with antimicrobial activity, identifying heat-stable proteins/peptides as the active compounds in Pediococcus acidilactici and Lactococcus garvieae. The research provides a pipeline for high-throughput screening of potential starter cultures and probiotics producing antimicrobial compounds.
