The consistency of the nonlocal strain gradient integral model in size-dependent bending analysis of beam structures

Pei Zhang et al.

Summary: In order to predict the size-effect of beam-like structures accurately, additional constitutive boundary conditions should be considered to ensure equivalence between differential and integral forms, with a balance needed between mandatory boundary conditions to achieve consistent results. Omitting higher-order boundary conditions was shown to provide stable results but may not meet the requirements of the energy-variational principle.

On the calibration of size parameters related to non-classical continuum theories using molecular dynamics simulations

Mojtaba Shariati et al.

Summary: This research focuses on the calibration of small-scale parameters of non-classical continuum theories for circular nanoplates, using various methods and techniques such as GDQR and molecular dynamics simulation. It was found that the nonlocal strain gradient method aligns well with the results of molecular dynamics in predicting natural frequencies, while other methods such as stress-driven nonlocal and strain-driven nonlocal elasticity have discrepancies in their predictions. These findings are valuable for researchers in non-classical continuum mechanics.

Wave propagation in one-dimensional fluid-saturated porous phononic crystals with partial-open pore interfaces

Shu-Yan Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the influence of interface conditions between adjacent layers on wave propagation in fluid-saturated porous periodic structures. Different methods are used to obtain the complex band structure and poroelastic Bloch waves of the crystal, while analyzing the effects of pore blockage, porosity, and viscosity. The results show that pore blockage significantly affects the dispersion of poroelastic waves and energy partition between solid skeleton and pore fluid. The effects of porosity and viscosity in the case of the partial-open pore interface condition are similar to those in fully open pore conditions previously obtained.

A size-dependent model for predicting the mechanical behaviors of adhesively bonded layered structures based on strain gradient elasticity

Hao Long et al.

Summary: Micro-scale adhesive layers play a key role in the performance of micro devices, with strong size effects on local interfacial tractions and global adherend displacement, especially for soft adhesives with low modulus. When the thickness of the adhesive layer approaches the material characteristic length scale, the interfacial tractions increase substantially and the adherend displacement decreases significantly, while the adherend displacement is insensitive to the adhesive modulus.

Summary: Four methods are applied to calculate the acoustooptic coupling in a one-dimensional phoxonic crystal cavity, investigating linear and quadratic couplings and their dependence on symmetry of acoustic and optical modes. Perturbation theory results are in good agreement with numerical results, and FEM combined with perturbation theory shows advantages over Born approximation.
