Progress and perspectives in laser additive manufacturing of key aeroengine materials

Chaolin Tan et al.

Summary: Aerospace is a key driver in advancing additive manufacturing, particularly in the high-value, high-mix low-volume production of complex parts. Laser additive manufacturing of aeroengine materials has shown significant progress, but there are gaps in research and challenges that need to be addressed, focusing on the relationship between material properties and process parameters.

Dual-detector electronic monitoring of electron beam selective melting

D. C. Zhao et al.

Summary: Electron Beam Selective Melting (EBSM) is an advanced additive manufacturing technique used in various industrial fields, but faces challenges in process monitoring and quality control. A dual-detector electronic imaging system was proposed for in-situ monitoring of EBSM process, showing a linear correlation between electronic current and surface height gradient, and the capability to visualize deposited surfaces and identify defects. The correlation between signal and topography indicates the potential for in-situ surface reconstruction and in-process quality control during EBSM process.

Electron-Optical In Situ Imaging for the Assessment of Accuracy in Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion

Christopher Arnold et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the capabilities of electron-optical (ELO) in situ imaging for monitoring and prediction of manufacturing precision in electron beam powder bed fusion. Results show that ELO imaging accurately captures molten layers and surface roughness, but cannot capture deformations induced by thermal stress. Comparing in situ and post-process data enables quantification of these effects for developing effective countermeasures in the future.

Exploring a novel panel-core connection method of large size lattice sandwich structure based on wire arc additive manufacturing

Tianqiu Xu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated a novel connection method based on pulse hot-wire arc additive manufacturing to address the weak connection between large size sandwich structure panels and lattice. The method showed good connection quality and efficiency, and the optimized process was achieved through systematic analysis.

Powder Bed Fusion of nickel-based superalloys: A review

Salome Sanchez et al.

Summary: Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) techniques offer high design flexibility and are attractive for manufacturing high-performance materials like nickel-based superalloys. A comprehensive review of the mechanical properties of PBF nickel-based superalloys, including their microstructure and process parameters, is provided in this paper to aid practitioners in identifying research opportunities. The study concludes with summaries of data on mechanical properties and discussions on process factors influencing functional performance.

Closed-loop control of medium-thickness plate arc welding based on weld-face vision sensing

Guodong Peng et al.

Summary: This paper introduces an innovative method of controlling weld formation, based on weld-face vision sensing, proposing the concept of "depression degree of the weld pool" and developing an image processing procedure. Experiments show that the method is remarkably effective in achieving full penetration and keeping backside bead width constant.

Wire Position Sensor for Controlling the Process of Electron Beam Layer-by-Layer Deposition: Modeling and Verification

Dmitriy N. Trushnikov et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the difficulties of performing electron beam deposition with wire material, including the impact of positioning the filler wire relative to the electron beam and the model of bremsstrahlung X-ray radiation formation during the interaction of the electron beam with the filler wire. The sensor model is used to detect changes in the position of the filler wire relative to the axis of the electron beam.
