Molecular identification and phylogenetic analysis of Papaver based on ITS2 barcoding

Liu Cheng et al.

Summary: Identifying species, especially Papaver somniferum, in forensic cases is crucial. By analyzing the ITS2 sequences of six Papaver species and comparing genetic distances, a phylogenetic tree, and secondary structures, it was found that P. somniferum can be accurately distinguished from closely related plants of the same genus using ITS2 as a DNA barcode.
