Processing of electroplating industry wastewater through dual chambered microbial fuel cells (MFC) for simultaneous treatment of wastewater and green fuel production

Tamilarasan Karuppiah et al.

Summary: Microbial fuel cells (MFC) offer a breakthrough solution for wastewater treatment and electricity production. This study focuses on using electroplating industrial wastewater as feedstock in a dual chamber anaerobic microbial fuel cell to remove organic content and generate energy. The findings demonstrate that the MFC efficiently removes organic matter and produces power, with the highest removal efficiency and power density achieved at an organic load of 1.5 gCOD/L.

An improved grey wolf optimizer for solving engineering problems

Mohammad H. Nadimi-Shahraki et al.

Summary: An Improved Grey Wolf Optimizer (I-GWO) is proposed in this article to tackle global optimization and engineering design problems by introducing a dimension learning-based hunting (DLH) search strategy. The IGWO algorithm addresses the lack of population diversity, imbalance between exploitation and exploration, and premature convergence seen in the GWO algorithm. Experimental results show that I-GWO is competitive against six other state-of-the-art metaheuristics, demonstrating its efficiency and applicability in engineering design problems.

Small boreholes embedded in the sediment layers make big difference in performance of sediment microbial fuel cells: Bioelectricity generation and microbial community

Zongyang Shi et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel configuration for sediment microbial fuel cells (SMFCs) by embedding a cylindrical borehole in the sediment layer to reduce internal resistance, enhance mass transfer, and increase power density. Experimental results show that SMFC-3 with a borehole depth of 3 cm produces the highest maximum power density, which is 25.5% and 65.6% higher than that in SMFC-6 with a borehole depth of 6 cm and the control group SMFC-C, respectively. The improved power performance in SMFC-3 is mainly attributed to the greatly reduced internal resistance and suitable pH conditions for cathodic reactions.
