Role of cellular wavelengths in self-acceleration of lean hydrogen-air expanding flames under turbulent conditions

Sheng Huang et al.

Summary: The investigation reveals that the lean H-2-air flame retains a two-stage self-acceleration feature in weak turbulent flow fields, which weakens as turbulent intensity increases; it transitions to a single-stage feature when the Karlovitz number exceeds 1. The observations are linked to the distribution and evolution of length scales in the cellular structure of the flamefront. Theoretical analysis comparing growth rates of disturbances induced by instability and turbulence provides interpretations for the observed phenomena and the response of quantitative parameters.

Propagation of hydrogen-oxygen flames in Hele-Shaw cells

Gongtian Gu et al.

Summary: Experimental investigation was conducted on flame propagation in Hele-Shaw cells with a micro-sized gap. Different regimes of flame propagation were identified based on gap size, leading to various flame front morphologies and speeds. The non-accelerating flame in narrow gaps exhibited distinct behaviors compared to the self-accelerating flame in wider gaps, influenced by hydrodynamic instabilities.

Inherent instabilities in ethyl acetate premixed flames

Francis Oppong et al.

Summary: The intrinsic flame instability of ethyl acetate spherically expanding premixture flame was investigated using experimental and theoretical analysis. The wrinkling factor of the premixture was found to increase with the Peclet number. Experimental data showed smaller Peclet numbers compared to theoretical, although the trend was consistent. An empirical correlation between flame instability and Markstein number was established.
