Oxidation mechanism for coal-assisted water electrolysis for hydrogen production: Evolution of different structures in coal molecules with reaction depth

Cong Chen et al.

Summary: Coal-assisted water electrolysis can produce pure hydrogen under mild conditions and reduce electricity consumption by 40-60%. Understanding the oxidation mechanism of coal particles during the electrolysis process is crucial for controlling the overall oxidation process. This study investigated the oxidation of coal particles at different reaction temperatures and characterized the changes in coal molecule structures using various analytical methods. The results showed that oxidation mainly occurred on the external surface and pores of coal particles, with aliphatic carbons being the main oxidation sites. The oxidation rate of C-O structure was faster, while C = O and COOH had slower oxidation rates, which controlled the overall coal oxidation process.

Roles of coal gasification wastewater in coal electrolysis for hydrogen production

Cong Chen et al.

Summary: Coal-assisted water electrolysis can reduce electricity consumption by 40-60%, but the hydrogen production rate is slow. Some coal gasification wastewater can promote coal oxidation, leading to hydrogen production at low cost. Gas washing water's main anodic reactions are the oxidation of organic matter, bromide ions, and water decomposition, with no significant interaction with Fe3+/Fe2+. It can increase the effective iron concentration in solution and improve coal's electrochemical activity, thus accelerating coal electrolysis.

Fe3+-mediated coal-assisted water electrolysis for hydrogen production: Roles of mineral matter and oxygen-containing functional groups in coal

Shuai Chen et al.

Summary: Fe3+-mediated coal-assisted water electrolysis (CAWE) for hydrogen production is an effective way to utilize coal resources. The roles of mineral matter and oxygen-containing functional groups (OGs) in promoting the development of Fe3+-mediated CAWE of low-rank coal are investigated in this study. The influence of minerals and OGs on the hydrogen yields of demineralized coal and oxidized coal is analyzed, showing significant differences compared to raw coal. Furthermore, the changes in microstructural, surface structure, and microcrystalline of the coal after electrolysis are examined.
