White dwarf stars in modified gravity

Aneta Wojnar

Summary: Modified gravity framework may provide alternative explanations to white dwarfs' cooling processes, age determination, and Chandrasekhar mass limits. Additionally, the Chandrasekhar limit has been obtained from Palatini f(Script capital R) gravity introduced by a simple Lane-Emden model.

First M87 Event Horizon Telescope Results. VIII. Magnetic Field Structure near The Event Horizon

Kazunori Akiyama et al.

Summary: The observations by the Event Horizon Telescope revealed important features of polarized emission around the supermassive black hole in M87, including disturbances in the polarization structure and a possible azimuthal linear polarization pattern formed by organized magnetic fields. This suggests insights into the structure of magnetic fields and plasma near the black hole, with implications for understanding the emission mechanisms and properties of the radiating plasma.

First M87 Event Horizon Telescope Results. VII. Polarization of the Ring

Kazunori Akiyama et al.

Summary: In April 2017, the Event Horizon Telescope observed the near-horizon region around the supermassive black hole at the core of the M87 galaxy, revealing a compact asymmetric ring-like structure originating from synchrotron emission. Only a part of the ring shows significant polarization, with the maximum linear polarization fraction located in the southwest part of the ring.

Polarimetric Properties of Event Horizon Telescope Targets from ALMA

Ciriaco Goddi et al.

Summary: This study presents the results of a full polarization study conducted using ALMA during the first VLBI campaign in 2017, revealing high linear polarization fractions and large rotation measures for various VLBI targets. The study also highlights the differences in polarization properties between blazars and other AGNs, as well as the variability in rotation measures for objects like Sgr A* and M87. The findings have important implications for the interpretation and calibration of VLBI data obtained simultaneously with EHT and GMVA.

White dwarfs and generalized uncertainty principle

I. H. Belfaqih et al.

Summary: This study investigates white dwarfs' mass and radius with three generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) models, finding that the quadratic GUP model is favored over the linear model. It is possible to obtain a higher mass limit in certain scenarios, and the linear-quadratic GUP model may allow for the formation of more massive stable white dwarfs.

Modified gravity in the interior of population II stars

Shaswata Chowdhury et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of modified gravity beyond Horndeski theory in the interior of a population II star, finding that reduced gravity may result in decreased luminosity and increased radius of the star, but some effects are reversed near the core. The model provides a constraint on the modified gravity parameter within its limitations.

A possible planet candidate in an external galaxy detected through X-ray transit

Rosanne Di Stefano et al.

Summary: The brightness dip in the extragalactic X-ray binary M51-ULS-1 is well fit by a planet transit model with a Saturn-sized eclipser. Possible orbits for the planet are consistent with its survival in a mass-transfer binary system. This suggests that planetary systems may also exist in external galaxies, and an alternative approach using X-ray temporal behavior can potentially detect them.

Invariant quantities of scalar-tensor theories for stellar structure

Aleksander Kozak et al.

Summary: The translation introduces relativistic hydrostatic equilibrium equations for a wide class of gravitational theories possessing a scalar-tensor representation, showing that the stellar structure equations can be written with respect to the scalar-tensor invariants. This allows for interpreting their physical role.

Metric-affine gravity effects on terrestrial exoplanet profiles

Aleksander Kozak et al.

Summary: The mass-radius relations of homogeneous cold spheres made from six common solid materials found in terrestrial planets are discussed, along with an additional degeneracy in (exo)planet profiles and their properties derived from findings in Palatini f(R) gravity framework. Furthermore, a new test of gravity is proposed where seismic data from earthquakes and marsquakes can be used to test and constrain gravity models.

Cooling process of brown dwarfs in Palatini f(R) gravity

Maria Benito et al.

Summary: The study presents an analytical model for the evolution of brown dwarfs in quadratic Palatini f(R) gravity, improving on previous studies by incorporating a more realistic description of the partially degenerate state and considering the hydrogen metallic-molecular phase transition. The revised cooling process for substellar objects is also addressed in this improved model.
