New insights on cellular structures strengthening mechanisms and thermal stability of an austenitic stainless steel fabricated by laser powder-bed-fusion

Thomas Voisin et al.

Summary: The rapid solidification cellular structures in 316L austenitic stainless steels fabricated by laser powder-bed-fusion were found to have specific crystallographic orientations in cell walls, which act as barriers to dislocation movement and contribute to material strengthening. Additionally, oxide precipitates confined inside cell walls also enhance the material's strength. Overall, the understanding of these intrinsic characteristics and strengthening mechanisms can help improve the material's thermal stability and high strength.

Fatigue performance of auxetic meta-biomaterials

H. M. A. Kolken et al.

Summary: Meta-biomaterials with auxetic properties show promise for long-lasting implants by expanding in response to tension. The study focused on additively manufactured auxetic structures made from CP-Ti, showing suitable morphological and mechanical properties for bone implant applications. The fatigue performance of these structures could potentially improve implant longevity in load-bearing settings.

Fractal dimension for bending-torsion fatigue fracture characterisation

Wojciech Macek et al.

Summary: The study compared fracture surfaces of different metallic materials after fatigue tests and established a direct correlation between fractal dimension and fatigue loading through fractal dimension analysis and optical measurement. This is important for obtaining fatigue loading information from the surfaces of failed materials and structures and contributes to a better understanding of fatigue failure processes.

Architected cellular materials: A review on their mechanical properties towards fatigue-tolerant design and fabrication

M. Benedetti et al.

Summary: Metal additive manufacturing is now a mature technology that is being used to produce high-performance parts, including mission-critical components. The intentional design of porous metal structures, such as cellular or lattice structures, offers advantages in terms of specific mechanical or performance characteristics. While concerns over structural integrity remain, improvements in the manufacturing processes are leading to better fatigue properties for additively manufactured cellular structures.
