New Insights on Tortuosity Determination by EIS for Battery Electrodes: Effect of Electrolyte Concentration and Temperature

Francisco Alcaide et al.

Summary: The study presents a method for determining the tortuosity of a porous NMC622 cathode using intercalating electrolyte under various operating conditions. The results show that reliable tortuosity values can be obtained using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements at practical experimental conditions in commercial lithium-ion batteries, like different temperatures and electrolyte concentrations. Comparing the obtained tortuosity values with those from a non-intercalating electrolyte confirms the validity of the approach.

Pressure-Dependent Electrochemical Behavior of Di-Lithium Rhodizonate Cathodes

Kenneth E. Madsen et al.

Summary: The study investigates the electrochemical properties of high-capacity organic cathode material Li2C6O6 under different mechanical loads. It shows that the charge-transfer kinetics at the cathode/electrolyte interface is strongly affected by the magnitude of the applied load. Increasing the load reduces charge-transfer impedance, leading to improvements in overpotential and capacity retention. This pressure-dependent effect is attributed to the suppression of a phase transition in the absence of sufficient external load, resulting in enhanced stability and electrochemical kinetics.

Quantifying Negative Effects of Carbon-Binder Networks from Electrochemical Performance of Porous Li-Ion Electrodes

Aashutosh Mistry et al.

Summary: This study systematically characterized the effects of the carbon-binder network on electrode performance by analyzing measured responses using macrohomogeneous models for electrodes with different carbon-binder content, thickness, and porosity but with identical materials. The research found that the impact of the carbon-binder network is more severe than previously thought, even at low content, causing a decrease in reaction area and an increase in ion transport resistance.

Pore Microstructure Impacts on Lithium Ion Transport and Rate Capability of Thick Sintered Electrodes

Ziyang Nie et al.

Summary: Increasing electrode thickness is one route to improve the energy density of lithium-ion battery cells, but restricted Li+ transport in the electrolyte phase through the porous microstructure of thick electrodes limits high current densities and rates of charge/discharge. This study explores processing routes to mitigate transport restrictions and shows that templating the electrode microstructure can significantly improve electrochemical cell properties, especially in situations where ion transport limitations are the rate-limiting step.

Capacity Fading Mechanisms in Ni-Rich Single-Crystal NCM Cathodes

Hoon-Hee Ryu et al.

Summary: The study found that despite the high resistance to microcracking, the electrochemical performance of single-crystal NCM cathodes is inferior to polycrystalline NCM cathodes in terms of capacity and cycling stability. During cycling, the lithium concentrations in single-crystal NCM cathodes become spatially inhomogeneous, leading to the coexistence of phases with different unit cell dimensions within a single particle, which affects lithium ion diffusion and causes rapid capacity fading.
