Influence of Madden-Julian Oscillation on extreme rainfall events in Spring in southern Uruguay

Matilde Ungerovich et al.

Summary: In Uruguay, the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) has the most significant influence on extreme rainfall events in the southern region when it persists in phases 4 and 5 for more than 5 days, intensifying the polar jet and affecting the trajectories of transient waves propagating in high latitudes, favoring geopotential disturbances over Uruguay. In other scenarios, extreme rainfall events are associated with blocking episodes that prevent high latitude transient activity from reaching Uruguay, causing disturbances to propagate along the subtropics.

Impacts of the Madden-Julian oscillation on precipitation extremes in Indonesia

Fadhlil R. Muhammad et al.

Summary: The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) significantly influences the frequency of extreme precipitation events in Indonesia during the rainy season, with varying impacts across regions. The probability of extreme precipitation events is attributed to changes in horizontal moisture flux convergence induced by MJO, providing predictability for daily extreme precipitation in Indonesia.

Improving the MJO Forecast of S2S Operation Models by Correcting Their Biases in Linear Dynamics

Jie Wu et al.

Summary: Most operational dynamic subseasonal to seasonal (S2S) models for Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) forecasting still struggle with systematic errors in capturing key dynamic features, but a method using linear dynamic operators corrected these errors and extended prediction skills by 2-4 days. Improvements were more significant for models with larger biases in MJO amplitude and propagation, and this approach may be applicable to other climate variability predictions like ENSO, with potential for nonlinear dynamics effects.

Examining the Role of Cloud Radiative Interactions in Tropical Cyclone Development Using Satellite Measurements and WRF Simulations

S. N. Wu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the crucial role of cloud-radiative interactions in tropical cyclone development using satellite measurements and WRF simulations. Measurements from Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System show that intensifying tropical cyclones have greater radiative heating from clouds within the cyclone area compared to weakening ones, suggesting the importance of enhanced radiative heating in cyclone intensification. Sensitivity experiments indicate that inhibiting cloud-radiative interactions can often hinder tropical cyclogenesis, highlighting the critical role that cloud-radiative interactions play in the development of tropical cyclones.
