Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 evaluation and projection of East African precipitation

Exavery Kisesa Makula et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of 43 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6) models in reproducing the characteristics of precipitation over East Africa. The results show that the models perform well in simulating the annual cycle but exhibit biases in the March to May (MAM) and October to December (OND) precipitation. Nine models outperform the others and the ensemble better agrees with the observations. Increases in precipitation over East Africa are projected by the end of the 21st century, with larger changes under SSP5-8.5 than under SSP2-4.5.

Evaluation of extreme precipitation indices over West Africa in CMIP6 models

Aissatou Faye et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of sixteen CMIP6 models in simulating extreme precipitation indices over West Africa, finding that the models reasonably reproduced the spatial patterns of the indices but exhibited differences between Sahel and Guinea coast subregions. Overall, the models overestimated consecutive wet days and heavy precipitation, with the ensemble mean performing better in capturing mean distributions of the extreme precipitation indices compared to individual models and gridded observations.

Variability of diurnal temperature range over Pacific Island countries, a case study of Fiji

Victor Ongoma et al.

Summary: Diurnal temperature range (DTR) is an important index in climate change studies and thermal comfort forecasting, with its variability in Fiji showing an increase with latitude and a positive correlation with maximum temperatures but an opposing relationship with minimum temperatures. The overall trend of increasing DTR is mainly explained by a greater rise in maximum temperatures compared to minimum temperatures, and the observed rate of increase in warm months exceeds that in cold months. These findings provide a foundation for further investigation into factors influencing DTR variability and its impact on human thermal comfort.

Future changes in precipitation extremes over Southeast Asia: insights from CMIP6 multi-model ensemble

Fei Ge et al.

Summary: Past assessments have shown that precipitation extremes in Southeast Asia are expected to intensify under global warming. Using outputs from 15 climate models, it was found that projected changes in precipitation extremes for Southeast Asia at the end of the 21st century are linked to rising greenhouse gas emissions. It is likely that more precipitation extremes will occur in a warmer future, especially over the Indochina Peninsula and the Maritime Continent.

Assessing current and future spatiotemporal precipitation variability and trends over Uganda, East Africa, based on CHIRPS and regional climate model datasets

Hamida Ngoma et al.

Summary: The study in Uganda highlighted the challenges of unreliable rainfall projection records and the importance of reliable estimates for local planning and adaptation in extreme wetness or drought events. Historical analysis revealed bimodal annual rainfall patterns and an upward trend in recent years. Future projections indicate wetter conditions in certain months and decreasing patterns in others, with implications for the agricultural sector heavily reliant on rainfall.

Projection of future extreme precipitation in Iran based on CMIP6 multi-model ensemble

Azar Zarrin et al.

Summary: This study projected the intensity of extreme precipitation in Iran based on CMIP6 bias-correction multi-model ensemble. The results showed uncertainties in CMIP6 models for precipitation, with no single reliable model even in the BC method. The models exhibited high bias for monsoon precipitation in the region affected by the Asian summer monsoon.

CMIP6 Evaluation and Projection of Temperature and Precipitation over China

Xiaoling Yang et al.

Summary: This article evaluates the performance of 20 CMIP6 models in simulating temperature and precipitation over China during 1995-2014, finding that they perform well in reproducing climatological spatial distribution and interannual variability, especially for temperature. The top-ranked ensemble BMME outperforms the AMME in simulating annual and winter temperature and precipitation, but shows little improvement for summer variables. The BMME projections suggest annual increases in temperature and precipitation across China by the end of the 21st century, with larger increases under SSP585 than SSP245.

Evaluation of precipitation simulations in CMIP6 models over Uganda

Hamida Ngoma et al.

Summary: This study evaluated 15 CMIP6 GCMs in simulating rainfall over Uganda and found that the models' performance varied greatly between different seasons. Some models overestimated rainfall during MAM and SON, while others underestimated it. Certain models also struggled to capture rainfall patterns around local-scale features. The study also identified the best performing models and called for caution in using these models for seasonal climate change studies due to their varying performance across different seasons.

Comparison of CMIP6 and CMIP5 models in simulating mean and extreme precipitation over East Africa

Brian Ayugi et al.

Summary: This study examines the improvements in simulating mean and extreme precipitation in East Africa using the CMIP6 models compared to CMIP5. The results show that the CMIP6 models have better performance in simulating seasonal rainfall, but there is still uncertainty and a need for further investigation into the sources of systematic biases.

Projected Changes in Extreme Temperature and Precipitation Indices Over CORDEX-MENA Domain

Tugba Ozturk et al.

Summary: This study investigated the projected changes in climate extreme indices over the Middle East and North Africa using regional climate model simulations downscaled from global climate model outputs. The results suggest an intensification of temperature- and precipitation-based extreme indices with increasing radiative forcing, particularly in the northern part of the Mediterranean Basin and the tropics. It is projected that warm nights and warm spell duration will increase significantly across the region, along with a decrease in cold extremes by the end of the century.

Business-as-usual will lead to super and ultra-extreme heatwaves in the Middle East and North Africa

George Zittis et al.

Summary: Global climate projections indicate that in the second half of this century, the Middle East and North Africa will experience unprecedented super- and ultra-extreme heatwaves, with temperatures reaching up to 56 degrees Celsius and lasting several weeks. By the end of the century, it is estimated that approximately 600 million people in the region will be exposed to these extreme heatwaves annually, with over 90% of the affected population living in urban centers and needing to cope with the disruptive weather conditions.

Projected future daily characteristics of African precipitation based on global (CMIP5, CMIP6) and regional (CORDEX, CORDEX-CORE) climate models

Summary: This study provides an assessment of future daily characteristics of African precipitation by comparing large ensembles of global and regional climate models, highlighting the similarities and inconsistencies between them. While results for some precipitation characteristics are consistent among ensembles, inconsistencies exist between global and regional models in projecting changes in specific regions and seasons. The study emphasizes the importance of a process-based evaluation of mechanisms controlling precipitation over the region.

Summary: This study assessed interannual variations and spatial patterns of simulated evapotranspiration (ET) over continental Africa in the 21st century using the latest model data. The results suggest the need for more attention on changes in ET and their impacts on extreme events, with recommendations for water resources managers to develop specific measures. Future Changes in Precipitation Extremes over East Africa Based on CMIP6 Models

Brian Ayugi et al.

Summary: The study suggests that projected precipitation extremes in the East African region may increase towards the end of the 21st century, with different precipitation indices showing significant changes in different seasons. Intensification is likely over Uganda and most parts of Kenya, while reduction is observed over the Tanzania region. These projected extremes may pose a serious threat to the sustainability of societal infrastructure and ecosystem wellbeing.

Comparison of statistical downscaling methods for climate change impact analysis on precipitation-driven drought

Hossein Tabari et al.

Summary: In this study, four statistical downscaling methods were compared to assess climate change impact on drought in Belgium. The quantile perturbation (QP) method outperformed the others in reproducing observed indicators. Dry day frequency is projected to increase significantly in summer, while total precipitation is expected to decrease. Winter total precipitation may significantly increase due to extreme precipitation intensification. Extreme dry spells are projected to increase in length.
