Preparation, characterization and antioxidant properties of curcumin encapsulated chitosan/lignosulfonate micelles

Derong Lin et al.

Summary: Chitosan/lignosulfonate composite micelles were successfully prepared and used to encapsulate curcumin. The encapsulation improved the stability, retention efficiency, and antioxidant activity of curcumin. These findings support the potential use of CS-LS as a delivery system for encapsulating hydrophobic biologically active substances.

Construction and characterization of antioxidative ferulic acid-grafted carboxylic curdlan conjugates and their contributions on 8-carotene storage stability

Zi-Wei Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, ferulic acid-grafted carboxylic curdlan conjugates were successfully synthesized via free radical-induced grafting, showing more prominent antioxidant benefits in vitro proportional to their grafting ratios. Compared with carboxylic curdlans, the grafted conjugates had lower thermal stability, molecular weight, and rheological property, as well as looser surface morphology.

Morteza Fathi et al.

Summary: Two nanostructured vehicles, LISG/Ca2+ nanoparticles and LISG/chitosan nanoparticles, were developed to enhance the bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy of curcumin towards cancer cells. The roughness and ruggedness of the nanostructured vehicles were studied, and their release profiles in the simulated gastrointestinal tract were observed. The nanoparticles exhibited excellent antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus, as well as targeted cytotoxic effects on a colon cancer cell line.

Recent advances to improve curcumin oral bioavailability

Saman Sabet et al.

Summary: The oral delivery of curcumin is limited due to its low water solubility, low bioaccessibility, and fast degradation in the gastrointestinal tract. Recent advances in new delivery systems have shown potential in improving curcumin oral bioavailability, particularly through approaches such as curcumin-lipid conjugates and mucoadhesive delivery systems.
