Preparation of Active Nanocomposite Film Consisting of Sodium Caseinate, ZnO Nanoparticles and Rosemary Essential Oil for Food Packaging Applications

Mahmood Alizadeh-Sani et al.

Summary: The incorporation of zinc oxide nanoparticles and rosemary essential oil into sodium caseinate matrix significantly improved the mechanical and barrier properties of the films, reduced water vapor permeability, and increased flexibility and strength. Microscopic and spectroscopic characterization revealed high compatibility of additives with the film matrix, forming uniform and homogeneous composite films with noteworthy antimicrobial activity. These biopolymer-based active films show promise for food packaging applications.

Recent advances in polymer-metallic composites for food packaging applications

Diogo Videira-Quintela et al.

Summary: The use of metallic micro- and/or nanoparticles as inorganic fillers for polymer properties improvement in food packaging is a popular trend. The research on polymer-metallic composites emphasizes the enhanced properties provided by the metallic fillers in the packaging and its impact on food shelf life, safety, and quality. While the advantages are significant, attention must also be given to the toxicity and environmental impact of these materials, particularly their migration behavior.
