Osteopontin regulates type I collagen fibril formation in bone tissue

Baptiste Depalle et al.

Summary: This study provides new evidence about the role of osteopontin (OPN) - a non-collagenous protein - on the structure and organization of the organic and mineral matrix in bone. Our findings show that OPN plays a crucial role before mineralization, during the formation of the collagen fibrils.

Development of orthophosphosilicate glass/poly(lactic acid) composite anisotropic scaffolds for simultaneous reconstruction of bone quality and quantity

Sungho Lee et al.

Summary: The reconstruction of organ-specific architecture is crucial for recovering original organ function. The anisotropic structure of bone tissue, influenced by collagen fibril alignment and bone apatite crystal direction, plays a significant role in bone regeneration. Novel orthophosphosilicate glass (PSG)/poly(lactic acid) composite anisotropic scaffolds were developed for controlling cell alignment and enhancing bone formation, leading to simultaneous reconstruction of bone quality and quantity. By releasing therapeutic ions, the scaffolds stimulated osteoblasts and designed the morphology of the scaffolds, effectively regenerating bone tissues with improved bone quality and quantity.

Highly accurate protein structure prediction with AlphaFold

John Jumper et al.

Summary: Proteins are essential for life, and accurate prediction of their structures is a crucial research problem. Current experimental methods are time-consuming, highlighting the need for accurate computational approaches to address the gap in structural coverage. Despite recent progress, existing methods fall short of atomic accuracy in protein structure prediction.

Biological Evaluation of a New Sodium-Potassium Silico-Phosphate Glass for Bone Regeneration: In Vitro and In Vivo Studies

Elisa Fiume et al.

Summary: The study characterizes a novel silicate bioactive glass with good cytocompatibility and strong pro-osteogenic properties in vitro and in vivo. Implantation of the glass induced clear osteogenic effects at the defect site, with complete resorption of the material and formation of new tissue observed after 3 months.
