This article discusses the importance of 3D machining technology in modern manufacturing and highlights the key role of process design based on 3D models in ensuring machining quality. By conducting a statistical analysis of relevant literature, it summarizes the key technologies and development trends in 3D process design.
Machining is the main method of forming parts/products. The traditional 2D machining technology can no longer meet the requirements of modern manufacturing. Machining process design based on a 3D model can effectively inherit 3D design model information. At the same time, it has a supporting role in the realization of intelligent design of the process and the shopfloor manufacturing system. Process planning is the bridge between product design and manufacturing. The effectiveness and accuracy of process design are the keys to ensuring machining quality. A 3D process design technology is evolving rapidly. Therefore, there is an urgent need to identify the current state of development and future trends in 3D process design technology and to provide an up-to-date literature review for experts and novices alike. This article uses the Web of Science (search platform) to conduct a statistical analysis of 371 publications from 2001 to 2021. It mainly focuses on key technologies: process information management, the establishment of the working procedure model, and the application of 3D processes on the shopfloor. The development process of 3D machining technology was systematically analyzed. Finally, the development trends of 3D process design prospects.
