Source identification and global implications of black carbon

Erika P. Blanco-Donado et al.

Summary: This study measured the black carbon (BC) concentration in the industrialized urban area of Barranquilla, Colombia, using both mobile and ambient monitoring. The results showed that vehicle traffic emissions were the primary source of BC, although biomass burning also had an influence. The concentration of BC was most affected by vehicle emissions and traffic congestion caused by road and transport infrastructure.

Summary: Engineered nanomaterials are commonly used in workplaces, with powder handling being the main source of particle emissions and exposures. Exposure levels are typically below suggested occupational limits. Various methods can be used to detect and quantify nanomaterials, both in the air and as surface contaminations.

Filaggrin Polymorphisms and the Uptake of Chemicals through the Skin-A Human Experimental Study

Summary: The study showed that FLG genotype influences the dermal absorption of some common chemicals. FLG null carriers were the most susceptible, with the shortest lag time and highest rate constants for skin absorption, excreting higher fractions of the applied dose. Additionally, results indicated that low FLG CNV resulted in increased dermal absorption of chemicals.

Analysis of urinary metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in precarious workers of highly exposed occupational scenarios in Mexico

Lorena Diaz de Leon-Martinez et al.

Summary: Exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) poses risks to human health, with precarious workers being particularly vulnerable due to high exposure rates. In Mexico, the levels of hydroxylated PAHs (OH-PAHs) in brickmakers, stonemasons, indigenous workers, and mercury miners vary, with different chemical fingerprints identified. The concentrations of OH-PAHs in these workers were similar to or higher than those in occupations classified as carcinogenic by the IARC, emphasizing the importance of exposure control and biological monitoring.

Critical Review of Diesel Exhaust Exposure Health Impact Research Relevant to Occupational Settings: Are We Controlling the Wrong Pollutants?

Katherine R. Landwehr et al.

Summary: Exposure to diesel exhaust from both older and newer technology engines negatively impacts the lungs, heart, and brain. Individuals with asthma, allergies, or respiratory diseases are more vulnerable to these effects compared to healthy individuals. Current occupational exposure limits for diesel exhaust particles and elemental carbon may need to be adjusted to mitigate health risks.

Evaluation of fireground exposures using urinary PAH metabolites

Christiane Hoppe-Jones et al.

Summary: This study aimed to quantify the exposure risks of firefighters during fire responses, measuring urinary PAH-OHs levels before and after structural fires. The results showed that all roles on the fireground experienced similar increases in PAH-OHs levels post-fire, with interior responses, smoke odor on skin, and lack of proper laundering or changing of protective gear being significant factors associated with increased exposure. Surveys conducted after the fires identified specific risks for increased exposure, especially for engineers and paramedics who may not be fully aware of their extent of exposure.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a job-exposure matrix dedicated to UFPs by assessing the association between fifty-seven work processes and the emitted UFPs. Results showed that 52.8% of the assessed occupational codes were associated with UFP exposure, with 42.6% involving very probable exposure and at a high frequency.

Low-level exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons is associated with reduced lung function among Swedish young adults

Ayman Alhamdow et al.

Summary: The study found that low-level PAH exposure in young adults was associated with reduced lung function, with increasing concentrations of PAH metabolites correlating with decreases in FEV1 and FVC in a dose-response manner. This has implications for public health due to the widespread presence of PAHs in the environment, and the clinical relevance of lung function in predicting all-cause and cardiovascular disease mortality.
