Low in-hospital mortality rate in patients with COVID-19 receiving thromboprophylaxis: data from the multicentre observational START-COVID Register

Daniela Poli et al.

Summary: This retrospective observational study on COVID-19 patients found that heparin treatment is significantly associated with reduced mortality rates, especially in patients older than 59 years. Additionally, the use of antithrombotic drugs during hospital stay was found to lower the occurrence of bleeding and thrombotic events.

Summary: This systematic review summarizes the literature on prediction rules for pulmonary embolism in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. The study found the need for new prediction rules that take into account patient-specific factors to better assess the risk.

Thrombotic Complications of COVID-19 Infection A Review

Rebecca A. Castro et al.

Summary: The novel coronavirus, COVID-19, has caused a global public health emergency with over 15 million cases. Infected patients may develop symptoms such as fever, cough, and fatigue, with severe cases leading to various thrombotic complications. It is crucial to have a high suspicion for thrombotic complications and regularly evaluate patients for bleeding risks.

Pulmonary embolism and COVID-19: A comparative analysis of different diagnostic models performance

Beatriz Valente Silva et al.

Summary: This study compared several diagnostic methods for pulmonary embolism in COVID-19 patients and found that none of the current diagnostic prediction rules are reliable predictors of PE in this population. A D-dimer threshold of 500 ng/mL may be a more suitable screening test for PE in COVID-19 patients.

COVID-19 coagulopathy: is it disseminated intravascular coagulation?

Marcel Levi et al.

Summary: Severe COVID-19 infections can lead to coagulopathy related to both venous and arterial thromboembolic disease, with characteristics that are similar but not identical to DIC. The virus's direct infection and damage to endothelial cells affect the coagulation response to COVID-19, potentially requiring separate diagnostic criteria for this distinct intravascular coagulation syndrome.

Clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in Brazil: Results from the Brazilian COVID-19 registry

Milena S. Marcolino et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics and outcomes of COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Brazilian hospitals. It found that certain parameters at hospital admission, such as age, chronic diseases, laboratory indicators, and treatment methods, were independently associated with a higher risk of in-hospital mortality. The study also highlighted the potential overuse of antimicrobials in COVID-19 patients.

Prevalence and Predictors of Venous Thromboembolism or Mortality in Hospitalized COVID-19 Patients

Stuart L. Cohen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the prevalence and predictors of venous thromboembolism (VTE) or mortality in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. The overall in-hospital VTE rate was 2.9% (4.9% in the ICU) and a VTE or mortality rate of 26.1%. Key predictors of VTE or mortality included advanced age, increasing CCI, history of cardiovascular disease, ICU level of care, and elevated maximum D-dimer with a cutoff at least four times the ULN. Use of prophylactic-dose anticoagulation but not treatment-dose anticoagulation was associated with reduced VTE or mortality.

Clinical characteristics and risk factors for symptomatic venous thromboembolism in hospitalized COVID-19 patients: A multicenter retrospective study

Jun-Ying Li et al.

Summary: The study found that severe and non-severe hospitalized COVID-19 patients have nearly 6 times and 3 times higher odds of developing symptomatic VTE compared to general medical inpatients. VTE commonly develops at a median of 21 days after symptom onset and independent risk factors include advancing age, cancer, longer interval from symptom onset to admission, lower fibrinogen, and higher D-dimer levels.

Summary: In patients with COVID-19, the incidence rates of PE and DVT were 16.5% and 14.8%, respectively, with over half of PE patients lacking DVT. The cutoff values of D-dimer levels seem applicable to patients with COVID-19.

Anticoagulation and In-Hospital Mortality From Coronavirus Disease 2019: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Chatphatai Moonla et al.

Summary: Coagulation abnormalities in COVID-19 patients can worsen disease severity, but the efficacy varies among different doses of anticoagulation therapy. Prophylactic dose anticoagulation shows lower mortality risk compared to non-anticoagulated patients, while intermediate-to-therapeutic dose anticoagulation may increase mortality and major bleeding. Our findings support the use of prophylactic dose anticoagulation for optimal efficacy and safety in hospitalized COVID-19 patients.
