Transformation and Mobility of Cu, Zn, and Cr in Sewage Sludge during Anaerobic Digestion with Pre- or Interstage Hydrothermal Treatment

Qian Wang et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion combined with hydrothermal treatment is an attractive technology for sewage sludge treatment and resource recovery. The study systematically characterizes the transformation of important heavy metals in sewage sludge during AD with pre- or interstage HT. Results show that both Cu and Zn predominantly occur as sulfides in HT hydrochars, with subsequent AD favoring the formation of specific metal species. These findings have important implications for understanding the fate and mobility of heavy metals in sludge-derived hydrochars and AD solids.

In Vivo Formation of HgSe Nanoparticles and Hg-Tetraselenolate Complex from Methylmercury in Seabirds-Implications for the Hg-Se Antagonism

Alain Manceau et al.

Summary: The study confirms that mercury toxicity may be underestimated when the molar ratio of selenium to mercury is relatively high, as mercury binds extensively to selenoproteins, reducing the storage of bioavailable selenium for detoxifying MeHg. Additionally, the research shows that Hg(Sec)4 could severely deplete the bioavailable selenium in muscle tissue, potentially causing harm from mercury toxicity in terrestrial animals.

The Effect of Aeration on Mn(II) Sorbed to Clay Minerals and Its Impact on Cd Retention

Natacha Van Groeningen et al.

Summary: In this study, the influence of aeration on anoxically formed Mn solid phases and its impact on Cd retention in the presence of clay minerals was investigated. Results showed that extended anoxic pre-equilibration partially prevented the oxidation of Mn(II), while extended exposure to air favored the formation of feitknechtite and birnessite. Aeration led to a decrease in pH and a net release of Cd2+ into the solution.

High Lead Bioavailability of Indoor Dust Contaminated with Paint Lead Species

Tyler D. Sowers et al.

Summary: House dust and residential soils can be significant sources of lead exposure for children. This study combines X-ray absorption spectroscopic fingerprinting and in vivo mouse relative bioavailability measurements to gain a better understanding of the determinants of house dust lead bioavailability. The results show that highly bioavailable lead species indicative of paint are major components in house dusts, with lead from paint likely driving measured bioavailability.

Mechanical Insights into Thiol-Mediated Synergetic Biotransformation of Cadmium and Selenium in Nematodes

Ling-Li Li et al.

Summary: The study revealed the specific roles of glutathione (GSH) and phytochelatins (PCs) in mediating CdSe NP formation in Caenorhabditis elegans. By monitoring the compositional and structural changes of Cd and Se species and the genetic-level responses of nematodes, the detailed Cd-Se interaction pathways were further deciphered.
