Negative thermal expansion in framework structure materials

Naike Shi et al.

Summary: Negative thermal expansion (NTE) is a counterintuitive phenomenon where unit cell volume of materials contracts upon heating. Framework structure materials, with flexible bridging units and large voids, facilitate transverse atomic vibrations leading to NTE. The magnitude of NTE is influenced by framework size and metal atom size, and can be controlled through chemical substitution, local structure distortion, and guest molecular or ion intercalation.

Anomalous Thermal Expansion in Ta2WO8 Oxide Semiconductor over a Wide Temperature Range

Yan Luo et al.

Summary: In this study, low thermal expansion over a wide temperature range was observed in the Ta2WO8 oxide semiconductor, achieved through a balance effect of the negative thermal expansion of the a axis and the positive thermal expansion of the b axis and the c axis. Analysis using variable temperature X-ray diffraction and variable pressure Raman spectroscopy identified the transverse vibration of bridging oxygen atoms as the driving force for this anomalous thermal expansion behavior.

Uniaxial negative thermal expansion behavior of β-CuSCN

Jiaqi Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the NTE mechanism of beta-CuSCN through various techniques, finding that rotations of S-C equivalent to N-Cu chains and collective motions of atoms played a significant role in the NTE along the c-axis. However, translational and librational motions of C equivalent to N units had a minor contribution to the NTE, distinguishing it from other known NTE mechanisms like cyanides and Prussian blue.

Negative thermal expansion in magnetic materials

Yuzhu Song et al.

Summary: The review summarizes the progress in magnetic NTE materials from Invar alloys to newly discovered materials like Mn-based antiperovskites, Laves phases, La(Fe, Si)13, Mn3Ge, R2Fe17, R(Fe,V)12, and R2Fe14B (R = rare earth elements). The NTE properties of magnetic materials can be controlled by adjusting magnetic exchange interaction through methods like chemical substitution, nanocrystallization, external field, and interstitial atoms. The main mechanisms of NTE of magnetic materials, including order-to-disorder transition, change of local moment, metamagnetic transition, short-range magnetic ordering, structural phase transition, and coexistence of magnetic phases, are summarized.

Negative thermal expansion: Mechanisms and materials

Erjun Liang et al.

Summary: The article reviews recent understandings on the underlying mechanisms of negative thermal expansion (NTE) and the development of NTE materials, highlighting NTE driven by phonons and the interplay between anisotropic elasticity and phonons. It also discusses issues affecting applications of NTE materials and strategies for discovering novel NTE materials with framework structures.
