Synthesis of Vinylene-Linked Covalent Organic Frameworks by Monomer Self-Catalyzed Activation of Knoevenagel Condensation

Shuai Bi et al.

Summary: Reticular chemistry has achieved versatile crystalline frameworks with molecular-level precision. In this study, we developed a strategy to synthesize vinylene-linked COFs through Knoevenagel condensation. The resulting COFs showed highly crystallized orthorhombic lattices with vertically aligned AA stacking modes and exhibited substantial semiconducting properties. These COFs also demonstrated high catalytic activity in water-splitting hydrogen evolution under visible light stimulation.

Crystalline C-C and C=C Bond-Linked Chiral Covalent Organic Frameworks

Chen Yuan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that C-C single bond-based COFs can be prepared by direct reduction of C=C bond-linked frameworks, resulting in frameworks with high crystallinity, porosity, and chemical stability. The method involves crystal-to-crystal transformation and has the potential to produce chemically functionalized COFs with new linkages that are otherwise difficult to obtain.

Building a Pyrazole-Benzothiadiazole-Pyrazole Photosensitizer into Metal-Organic Frameworks for Photocatalytic Aerobic Oxidation

Ji-Kang Jin et al.

Summary: Charge separation is crucial in regulating photochemical properties in photocatalysts design. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising candidates for heterogeneous photocatalysis due to their designability and photon absorption tunability. A pyrazole-benzothiadiazole-pyrazole organic molecule with a donor-acceptor-donor conjugated pi-system was designed for fast charge separation, resulting in a more effective heterogeneous photocatalyst JNU-204, which demonstrated stability and reusability in aerobic oxidation reactions under visible-light irradiation. JNU-204 also showed applications in the synthesis of marine natural product core skeletons.

A reticular chemistry guide for the design of periodic solids

Hao Jiang et al.

Summary: Reticular chemistry has enabled the synthesis of diverse metalorganic frameworks and covalent organic frameworks through the linking of well-defined molecular building blocks into crystalline extended frameworks. The methodologies in this field are based on building blocks, targeted nets, and isoreticular chemistry, with emphasis on edge-transitive nets for the design of MOFs. Emerging concepts such as merged-net approach and net-coded building units show potential in synthesizing intricate or multi-component MOFs. Challenges and opportunities exist in the modification, expansion, and contraction of building blocks for the assembly of increasingly intricate frameworks.

Highly Stable Polyoxovanadate-Based Zn-MOF with Dual Active Sites as a Solvent-free Catalyst for C-C Bond Formation

Hongrui Tian et al.

Summary: The zinc-organic framework V-Zn-MOF combines rich Lewis acid and base sites, efficiently catalyzing Knoevenagel condensation and cyanosilylation of aromatic aldehydes. The synergetic effect of open zinc sites as Lewis acid and {V2O6}(n)(2n-) polyanion as Lewis base contributes to the selective catalytic activity. The connection mode of {V2O5}-O-Zn enhances efficiency by reducing the molecular size distance between substrates.
