Structural and Spectroscopic Effects of Li+ Substitution for Na+ in LixNa1-xCaGd0.5Ho0.05Yb0.45(MoO4)3 Scheelite-Type Upconversion Phosphors

Chang-Sung Lim et al.

Summary: A new set of triple molybdates phosphors were successfully manufactured using microwave-accompanied sol-gel-based process, and the influence of Li+ on their spectroscopic features was investigated. The crystal structures of the samples with different Li doping levels were determined, showing a linear cell volume decrease with increasing Li doping level. The study discussed the upconversion behavior, Raman spectroscopic results, and the impact of Li+ ions on the crystal structure and transition probabilities of the molybdates.

Luminescent Er3+ centers in CaSc2O4:Er3+:Yb3+upconversion phosphor

Angela Enachi et al.

Summary: The study investigated luminescent centers in Er:Yb:CaSc2O4 and observed two distinct centers, with one dominating at low temperatures, while the population of the other center increased with doping concentrations. This study also explored the Stark energy levels for both centers and discussed the temperature dependence of upconversion intensity.

Internal OH- induced cascade quenching of upconversion luminescence in NaYF4:Yb/Er nanocrystals

Yansong Feng et al.

Summary: Internal hydroxyl impurities have been identified as detrimental factors affecting the upconversion efficiency of upconversion luminescence nanomaterials. By quantifying and adjusting the internal hydroxyl impurity in NaYF4 nanocrystals, researchers have unraveled the microscopic interactions underlying UCL quenching and proposed a concept of Survivor effect to explain the UC dynamical process involving internal hydroxyl. The new quantitative insights obtained from this study are expected to promote the development of highly efficient UC materials.

CaSc2O4 hosted upconversion and downshifting luminescence

Tian Wei et al.

Summary: This study reports the dual luminescent emissions of lanthanide-doped scandates, such as CaSc2O4:Yb/Ln, showcasing strong and nearly pure green upconversion emission even at low doping concentrations. The decent optical performance of these materials is attributed to the relatively low photon energy, robust thermal stability, and efficient energy transfer within the rigid framework of CaSc2O4 defined by the ScO6 octahedra.

Lanthanide doped luminescence nanothermometers in the biological windows: strategies and applications

Albenc Nexha et al.

Summary: The development of lanthanide-doped non-contact luminescent nanothermometers has led to their use as accurate, efficient and fast diagnostic tools, replacing conventional contact thermal probes, due to their versatility, stability and narrow emission band profiles. These nanothermometers utilize lanthanide-doped materials as temperature nanosensors, excited by UV, visible or NIR light, emitting in the I-BW, II-BW, III-BW and IV-BW regions, showing advantages such as reduced phototoxicity and photobleaching, improved image contrast and deeper tissue penetration. Factors affecting the thermal sensitivity and temperature resolution of lanthanide ion-doped nanomaterials in biomedical applications are summarized, along with strategies to boost their sensing properties in each biological window.
