Efficacy and safety of dual intravenous artesunate plus quinine compared to intravenous artesunate for cerebral malaria in a triple blinded parallel multisite randomized controlled trial in Nigerian children: DUAL PAQ TRIAL Protocol

Michael Abel Alao et al.

Summary: This study aims to conduct a triple blinded parallel randomized controlled trial on cerebral malaria using dual intravenous medications compared to the current standard of monotherapy. It will provide insight into the efficacy and safety of dual intravenous antimalaria in the treatment of cerebral malaria among Nigerian children compared with the standard of care. The safety profile of this intervention will be highlighted, potentially informing physicians on the optimal treatment for cerebral malaria to improve outcomes and reduce recrudescence and treatment failure.

Evidence of Artemisinin-Resistant Malaria in Africa

Betty Balikagala et al.

Summary: Research conducted in Northern Uganda revealed the emergence of artemisinin-resistant Plasmodium falciparum strains, with predominant mutations found in the kelch13 gene. Thirteen patients were infected with P. falciparum parasites carrying mutations in the A675V or C469Y allele, which were associated with prolonged parasite clearance half-lives.
