Identification of an olive (Olea europaeaL.) core collection with a new set of SSR markers

Maria Victoria Gomez-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: Simple Sequence Repeat (SSR) or microsatellite markers are valuable tools in genetic studies, with a new set of tetra- and hexa-nucleotide SSR markers being developed for olive tree cultivar identification. The multiplex PCR protocol allows for efficient differentiation between olive cultivars using only a few SSR markers. Additionally, the use of a subset of SSR markers can successfully distinguish any cultivar from a core collection of olive germplasm.

Simple sequence repeat-based mini-core collection for white Guinea yam (Dioscorea rotundata) germplasm

Babil Pachakkil et al.

Summary: A subset representing the genetic diversity of a base collection is crucial for efficient plant genetic resources utilization, especially for vegetatively propagated tuber crops like white Guinea yam. In this study, a mini-core collection of 102 Dioscorea rotundata accessions was developed, retaining nearly 98% of the SSR allelic diversity of the base collection. The selected mini-core accessions exhibited a wide range of variation in agronomic traits and could be useful for breeding programs and genetic improvement in West Africa.

The World Vegetable Center Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) Core Collection as a Source for Flooding Stress Tolerance Traits for Breeding

Roland Schafleitner et al.

Summary: Okra is a heat tolerant vegetable crop with high economic and nutritional importance in certain regions. A core collection of 166 okra accessions was selected for their response to flooding stress, with specific accessions showing maintained growth and health under flooding being chosen for further analysis and breeding purposes.

Diversity analysis and establishment of core collection among Akebia trifoliata (Thunb.) Koidz. in Qinba mountain area of China using ISSR and SRAP markers

Zheng Zhang et al.

Summary: The study assessed 242 A. trifoliata accessions from 12 populations in Qinba mountain area of China using ISSR and SRAP markers, revealing high genetic diversity within populations and explaining genetic variation among populations based on geographical distances. High genetic differentiation and gene flow were observed, leading to the selection of a core collection of 56 accessions for conservation and germplasm selection.
