Steam Explosion Pretreatment of Lignocellulosic Biomass: A Mini-Review of Theorical and Experimental Approaches

Isabelle Ziegler-Devin et al.

Summary: Steam Explosion is an efficient and environmentally friendly process for the pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass, crucial for the development of the biorefinery concept. The two distinct steps of steam cracking and explosive decompression in SE have been studied empirically, highlighting the need for further clarification and research.

Combined steam explosion and optimized green-liquor pretreatments are effective for complete saccharification to maximize bioethanol production by reducing lignocellulose recalcitrance in one-year-old bamboo

Hairong Gao et al.

Summary: This study achieved complete biomass enzymatic saccharification in one-year-old bamboo samples, leading to the highest bioethanol yield. The combined pretreatments not only effectively co-extracted hemicellulose-lignin complexes, but also significantly modified major wall polymer features, resulting in reduced lignocellulose recalcitrance.

Multiscale investigation on the chemical and anatomical changes of lignocellulosic biomass for different severities of hydrothermal treatment

Julia P. Lancha et al.

Summary: This study used a multiscale approach combining confocal Raman microscopy and X-ray nano-tomography to investigate the chemical changes and structural effects of lignocellulosic biomass during hydrothermal treatment. The results showed that holocellulose hydrolysis and lignin modifications were observed at the cell wall level, leading to shrinkage and thinner cell walls in the samples. Moreover, more severe pre-treatments resulted in cell disruption and detachment, with anatomical changes providing quantitative indicators of treatment severity.

Recent advances in lignocellulose prior-fractionation for biomaterials, biochemicals, and bioenergy

Xiaojun Shen et al.

Summary: Lignocellulosic biomass is considered the best candidate for producing biomaterials, biochemicals, and bioenergy due to over-consumption of fossil resources and environmental problems. Efficient and green fractionation of lignocellulose components can greatly enhance high-value utilization and biorefinery development, but the heterogeneity of lignocellulosic structure poses challenges to this process. Through strategies such as cellulose-first, hemicelluloses-first, and lignin-first fractionation, selective dissociation and transformation of components in lignocellulose can be achieved, offering both challenges and opportunities for biorefining valorization.

Extraction of acetylated glucuronoxylans and glucomannans from Okoume (Aucoumea klaineana Pierre) sapwood and heartwood by steam explosion

Errol Mougnala Moukagni et al.

Summary: This study focused on extracting polymeric hemicelluloses from different parts of Aucoumea klaineana Pierre using Steam Explosion and conventional extraction methods. The hemicelluloses extracts were characterized, providing insights for further innovative processing. Different impregnation methods resulted in the recovery of different types of hemicelluloses, with neutral impregnation preserving more acetyl groups.
