Production of antibacterial cement composites containing ZnO/lignin and ZnO-SiO2/lignin hybrid admixtures

Izabela Klapiszewska et al.

Summary: In this study, inorganic-organic systems based on ZnO or ZnO-SiO2 and lignin were used for the first time to counteract the biodeterioration of cement composites. The systems showed good stability and lignin was able to be uniformly dispersed in the cement matrix. Zinc oxide was found to retard the hydration of the cement binder and inhibit bacterial and fungal pathogens, with silica balancing out the adverse effects to some extent.

Role of nano-zirconia in the mechanical properties improvement of resin cement used for tooth fragment reattachment

Baraa M. El-Kemary et al.

Summary: Zirconium dioxide nanoparticles were synthesized and mixed with a resin cement, significantly enhancing the mechanical properties. The optimal improvement in mechanical properties was achieved by adding 3.0 wt% nano-ZrO2. Incorporation of nano-ZrO2 up to 3.0% wt did not cause significant cell death, indicating potential clinical usage for dental applications.

Highly efficient and sustainable alginate/carboxylated lignin hybrid beads as adsorbent for cationic dye removal

Jong-Chan Kim et al.

Summary: The study involved the preparation of chemically modified lignin and alginate hybrid adsorbents for efficient removal of cationic dyes. The encapsulation of carboxylated lignin into alginate beads resulted in higher methylene blue removal capacity due to the introduction of carboxylated anions. The Alg/C-Lig beads exhibited a high monolayer maximum adsorption capacity and stable adsorption efficiency even after multiple adsorption/desorption cycles, making them a promising candidate for dye wastewater purification.

Malgorzata Stanisz et al.

Summary: A new type of functional lignin-based spherical particles (L-CTAB) prepared with the use of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) was found to be an effective biosorbent for removing vanadium(V) ions, with a maximum sorption capacity of 10.79 mg/g. The adsorption of V(V) ions on the surface of L-CTAB was discovered to be a heterogeneous, endothermic, and spontaneous reaction.

Roberta A. Teixeira et al.

Summary: Hybrids of biomass-based materials were prepared by reacting 3-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane with Ayous wood sawdust to enhance sorption capacity for the removal of reactive blue 4 dye from water. The adsorption process was found to be endothermic and spontaneous, with a significant increase in dye removal efficiency compared to unmodified biomass-based materials.
