Recent Impacts of Heterogeneous Catalysis in Biorefineries

Richard Ahorsu et al.

Summary: Renewable biofuel is crucial in reducing dependency on fossil fuel in the energy future. Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) reactions on heterogeneous catalysts are complex and limited in selectivity, requiring attention to catalyst stability and selectivity. Strategies in developing heterogeneous catalytic systems to overcome harsh reaction conditions associated with HDO are discussed.

Choline Chloride Urea Effect on Liquid-Liquid Equilibria of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural-Water-Organic Solvent Systems in the Absence and Presence of Sodium Chloride

Saidah Altway et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that choline chloride urea can enhance the efficiency and purity of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) production. The addition of NaCl can improve the liquid-liquid phase separation of HMF, leading to better extraction performance.

Efficient Conversion of Glucose to 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural over a Sn-Modified SAPO-34 Zeolite Catalyst

Xiangbo Song et al.

Summary: Efficient conversion of biomass-derived carbohydrates into highly value-added 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) using Sn/SAPO-34 catalysts was investigated. Control of Sn loading amount could adjust acid strength and amount in the catalyst, while excessively high loading would decrease performance due to structure damage. The 5%Sn/SAPO-34 catalyst showed superior performance in achieving high HMF yield from glucose conversion.
