Enabling improved water and environmental management in an irrigated river basin using multi-agent optimization of reservoir operations

Faizal I. W. Rohmat et al.

Summary: In the Lower Arkansas River Basin in Colorado, inefficient irrigation and canal seepage lead to salinization, waterlogging, and stream-aquifer pollution, requiring the implementation of best management practices (BMPs) to address these environmental impacts. However, the benefits of BMPs are offset by altered irrigation return flows, putting compliance with water rights and the Arkansas River Compact at risk. Compensation can be achieved through optimizing the sizing and operation of a dedicated reservoir storage account.

Phosphorus fate, transport and management on subsurface drained agricultural organic soils: a review

Genevieve Grenon et al.

Summary: Large quantities of mineral phosphorus fertilizer applied to intensively cultivated organic soils can cause rapid build-up of this nutrient and result in P loss through subsurface tile drainage water. Utilizing drainage water management (DWM) can effectively mitigate these losses and is a potential strategy for P retention in organic soils.

Hybrid SWMM and particle swarm optimization model for urban runoff water quality control by using green infrastructures (LID-BMPs)

Soudabeh Taghizadeh et al.

Summary: A new methodology for planning green infrastructures for improving urban runoff water quality was proposed, aiming to optimize the design of low impact development practices in urban areas. Results indicate that bio-retention basins are the most effective single BMP, while an optimized combination of BMPs can significantly reduce TSS concentrations.

Event-scale hysteresis metrics to reveal processes and mechanisms controlling constituent export from watersheds: A review

Wenlong Liu et al.

Summary: This paper summarizes the progress in studying the C-Q relationships at event-scales using high-frequency measurements provided by in situ sensors, introduces tools and methods in hysteresis analysis, and provides a typical workflow for event-scale hysteresis analysis. The paper also discusses potential limitations in the workflow and future challenges to be addressed, aiming to provide a critical overview of technical approaches for researchers.

Tiyasha Tiyasha et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the reliability of four feature selector algorithms and compares four tree-based predictive models to predict changes in dissolved oxygen in the Klang River, Malaysia. Among the predictive models, XGBoost performed the best, followed by MARS, while the Boruta-XGBoost model showed weaker performance.

Using artificial neural networks to improve phosphorus indices

P. Welikhe et al.

Summary: The study aimed to demonstrate how artificial neural networks (ANNs) can be used to determine weighting factors (WFs) in the phosphorus index (PI) to improve its performance. Results showed that the ANN model provided reliable estimates of soluble P concentrations in tile effluent and emphasized the importance of routine soil P testing for environmental stewardship, as well as the necessity of prioritizing contemporary and legacy P sources during P loss risk assessments.
