Important questions to progress science and sustainable management of anguillid eels

David Righton et al.

Summary: Anguillid eels are globally distributed in various aquatic environments and face threats from human activities, climate change, and other factors. Research is needed to address knowledge gaps and to develop effective management strategies for the conservation of these important species. Three main research themes were identified, but significant challenges remain in understanding and protecting eel populations.

Trophic ecology of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) across different salinity habitats inferred from fatty acid and stable isotope analysis

Camilla Parzanini et al.

Summary: Our study found significant differences in the trophic ecology of European eels between freshwater and seawater environments, including variations in fatty acid content and stable isotope ratios. Eels in brackish water showed higher dietary plasticity. Larger individuals were in better overall condition regardless of habitat.

Toward a roadmap for diadromous fish conservation: the Big Five considerations

Pieterjan Verhelst et al.

Summary: The increasing habitat fragmentation is a major factor leading to dramatic reductions in migratory species populations worldwide, particularly diadromous fish species. Despite numerous management measures and investments, desired results are often lacking. A comprehensive management strategy that considers the five major factors influencing diadromous fish species is proposed for restoring their populations.
