Spatial and seasonal variation in physicochemical characteristics and phytoplankton in an estuary of a tropical delta system

Denise dos Santos Costa et al.

Summary: The study investigated the spatial-seasonal variation in hydrological characteristics and phytoplankton community in relation to the saline gradient in the delta of the Parnaiba River, identifying a clear spatial gradient related to salinity and key bioindicator species for different zones. Seasonality and spatial distribution significantly affected variables such as chlorophyll a, suspended particulate matter, and nitrite concentrations.

Effects of terrestrial inputs and seawater intrusion on zooplankton community structure in Daya Bay, South China Sea

Chenhui Xiang et al.

Summary: Daya Bay is a eutrophic coastal region with dynamic physico-chemical conditions influenced by terrestrial inputs and seawater intrusion. Zooplankton diversity is lowest in estuaries and dominated by small copepods, while higher diversity is observed at bay mouths influenced by salty intruded seawater. Human activities have an impact on the succession of dominant species in this area.

Characterization of phytoplankton size-structure based productivity, pigment complexes (HPLC/CHEMTAX) and species composition in the Cochin estuary (southwest coast of India): special emphasis on diatoms

Meenu Paul et al.

Summary: The study in the Cochin estuary showed a consistent dominance of diatoms, with small-sized nanophytoplankton contributing significantly to total chlorophyll a and primary production regardless of seasons. Diatoms showed a notable increase in numerical abundance during the post-southwest monsoon, supported by an increase in fucoxanthin over other marker pigments. High levels of SPM and water column turbidity were identified as significant environmental factors hindering the growth of large-sized phytoplankton in the estuary.

Algal blooms and trophic state in a tropical estuary blocked by a dam (northeastern Brazil)

Ana Karoline Duarte dos Santos Sa et al.

Summary: This study reports on phytoplankton blooms and trophic state at Bacanga River Estuary, revealing it to be in a hypereutrophic state. While TSI shows significant relationship with specific phytoplankton blooms, it seems to be the trophic index with a better response in evaluating estuarine ecological functioning.
