Associations between infant sex and DNA methylation across umbilical cord blood, artery, and placenta samples

Anne K. Bozack et al.

Summary: This study examines DNAm patterns in cord blood, placenta, and umbilical artery samples, identifying DMRs and DMPs associated with sex. Replication analysis shows overlap with identified DMRs in an independent cohort. Results indicate higher methylation levels among females in cord blood and artery samples, but higher levels among males in placenta samples. Further research is needed to understand the biological mechanisms contributing to sex-specific DNAm differences across tissues and their impact on response to environmental stressors.

Do assisted reproductive technologies and in vitro embryo culture influence the epigenetic control of imprinted genes and transposable elements in children?

J. Barberet et al.

Summary: This study compared the epigenetic profiles of children conceived through ART and naturally conceived children, finding significant differences in DNA methylation levels of IGs between the two groups. While there were no differences found in the culture media, specific IG regions related to development showed methylation changes between children conceived through ART and naturally conceived children.

Expression and DNA Methylation Status of the Imprinted Genes PEG10 and L3MBTL1 in the Umbilical Cord Blood and Placenta of the Offspring of Assisted Reproductive Technology

Yun-xia Wang et al.

Summary: This study suggests that assisted reproductive technology (ART) may increase the risk of abnormal expression of PEG10 and L3MBTL1 in offspring imprinted genes, with methylation status possibly regulating the expression of these genes. The findings highlight potential implications for the impact of ART on offspring development and gene regulation.

Multi-locus imprinting disturbances of Beckwith-Wiedemann and Large offspring syndrome/Abnormal offspring syndrome: A brief review

Paula Magnelli Mangiavacchi et al.

Summary: In vitro fertilization and somatic cell nuclear transfer are commonly used assisted reproduction technologies in humans and cattle, which can lead to imprinting disorders in offspring like LOS/AOS and BWS. The etiology of these syndromes mainly involves disruptions in genomic imprinting, resulting in loss of imprinting (LOI).

Conception by fertility treatment and offspring deoxyribonucleic acid methylation

Summary: The study found that assisted reproductive technologies (ART) were associated with differences in DNA methylation levels at birth compared to children conceived without fertility treatment, but only one difference at an imprinting region appeared to persist in childhood.

DNA methylation patterns within whole blood of adolescents born from assisted reproductive technology are not different from adolescents born from natural conception

B. Penova-Veselinovic et al.

Summary: The DNA methylation profiles of adolescents born from ART (IVF or ICSI) were found to be not significantly different from their naturally conceived counterparts. This suggests that the effects of ART on DNA methylation are transient and do not persist into adolescence. However, alternative epigenetic mechanisms may still be at play.

Association of medically assisted reproduction with offspring cord blood DNA methylation across cohorts

Doretta Caramaschi et al.

Summary: This study did not find strong evidence linking medically assisted reproduction with variation in infant blood cell DNA methylation. While some associations were detected in two study cohorts, they were not replicated in another cohort, suggesting the need for further research to identify replicable variation in DNA methylation due to medically assisted reproduction.

Association of Assisted Reproductive Technology Treatments with Imprinting Disorders

T. Kopca et al.

Summary: Assisted reproductive technology (ART) is a revolutionary treatment method in infertility, aiding infertile couples worldwide. Despite its success in increasing birth rates, ART procedures have been found to potentially disturb gene expression levels, especially among imprinted genes, leading to an increased risk of imprinting disorders such as Beckwth-Wiedemann syndrome, Angelman syndrome, and Silver-Russell syndrome.
