Barriers to safety and efficiency in robotic surgery docking

Lucy Cofran et al.

Summary: Observations were made on flow disruptions during 45 procedures in multiple specialties at three hospitals. Results revealed that the docking process in robotic assisted surgery was more prone to disruptions, particularly in room organization, supply retrieval, patient positioning, and robot maneuvering.

A Smartphone Application for Teamwork and Communication in Trauma: Pilot Evaluation in the Wild

Ken Catchpole et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the potential of a smartphone application in improving trauma care through shared access to patient information. Despite generally acceptable usability and widespread use during the trial period, the app did not show significant effects on flow disruptions, teamwork scores, or treatment times. However, the pilot trial demonstrated the potential value of clinician-centered smartphone apps in enhancing teamwork and communication in trauma care delivery.

Frontiers in human factors: embedding specialists in multi-disciplinary efforts to improve healthcare

Ken Catchpole et al.

Summary: The healthcare industry faces challenges in applying human factors principles effectively for the benefit of patients, staff well-being, and organizational performance. Misunderstandings have limited opportunities for qualified HF professionals in clinical settings, but recent success of embedded clinical HF practitioners shows promise. Closer collaboration between healthcare and HF professionals will bring significant and beneficial changes.

Work systems analysis of sterile processing: assembly

Myrtede Alfred et al.

Summary: This study conducted at a 700-bed academic hospital in the Southeastern United States aimed to develop a comprehensive understanding of the assembly stage of reprocessing through work systems analysis. Various work challenges impacting reliable instrument reprocessing, such as technological shortcomings, production pressures, and tray composition, were identified, highlighting the need for a well-designed instrument tracking system, standardised nomenclature, effective coordination between SPD and the OR, and well-trained sterile processing technicians to improve overall reliability and minimise tray defects in surgical settings.

Work-system interventions in robotic-assisted surgery: a systematic review exploring the gap between challenges and solutions

Falisha Kanji et al.

Summary: The introduction of robots in the surgical suite has created new opportunities for success and failure, with identified barriers including communication breakdowns and equipment issues. However, there is a significant gap in solutions to these barriers. Team training, checklist development, and workspace redesign are common solutions proposed for improving efficiency and safety in Robotic Assisted Surgery (RAS).

The Evidence Behind Robot-Assisted Abdominopelvic Surgery A Systematic Review

Naila H. Dhanani et al.

Summary: The study compared the outcomes of robot-assisted surgery, laparoscopy, and open surgery in adults, finding no clear advantage with existing robotic platforms. While robot-assisted surgery showed fewer complications in some studies, it had longer operative duration and higher costs. Further refinement, competition, and cost reduction may improve future versions of robot-assisted surgery.
