MRS-measured glutamate versus GABA reflects excitatory versus inhibitory neural activities in awake mice

Yuhei Takado et al.

Summary: The study aims to investigate whether MRS-measured Glutamate (Glu) and GABA can reflect excitatory and inhibitory neural activities of neurons in an awake condition. Results showed that while excitatory neuronal activities increased during prolonged sensory stimulations, inhibitory neuronal activities remained at baseline levels in the first session, and in the second half, inhibitory activities were significantly enhanced. This suggests that MRS signals can reflect regional neurochemical statuses that align with neural activities, providing insight into the neurochemistry of neuron populations in awake mice.
