Coping With Urban Habitats Via Glucocorticoid Regulation: Physiology, Behavior, and Life History in Stream Fishes

Summary: As environments become urbanized, tolerant species become more prevalent. This study examined the glucocorticoid profiles, life-history traits, and behavior of two fish species across a gradient of urbanization. The results showed reduced stress responsiveness and higher reproductive output in more urbanized streams, suggesting that suppressing glucocorticoids may be adaptive for coping with urban habitats. Rapid recovery to baseline glucocorticoid levels was also found to be an important coping mechanism. These findings contribute to understanding species-specific adaptations and community structure in freshwater systems associated with land-use converted areas.
