Meta-analysis investigating the relationship between clinical features, outcomes, and severity of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pneumonia

Jia Li et al.

Summary: Research findings showed that severe (ICU) COVID-19 cases were more likely to have a smoking history, along with comorbidities such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular diseases, and malignancy. There were significant differences between severe and nonsevere cases in terms of clinical symptoms, laboratory test results, and treatments. Patients in the severe group had higher complication rates, mortality rates, and lower discharge rates compared to nonsevere cases.

Summary: The systematic literature review of COVID-19 patients admitted to hospitals revealed that fever and cough were the most common symptoms. Comorbidities such as hypertension and cardiovascular disease were prevalent, and severe adverse outcomes included acute respiratory distress syndrome, acute cardiac injury, acute kidney injury, and mortality.

Summary: The prevalence of cardiac injury is significantly increased in COVID-19 patients, particularly in those with severe disease and non-survivors. Cardiac injury is associated with a significant increase in the risk of poor outcomes, including severe disease, admission to ICU, and mortality.

Clinical features, comorbidities, complications and treatment options in severe and non-severe COVID-19 patients: A systemic review and meta-analysis

Mohan Giri et al.

Summary: This analysis aimed to assess the prevalence of clinical features, comorbidities, complications, and treatment options in COVID-19 patients, comparing severe and non-severe cases. The results showed that clinical symptoms like fever, cough, fatigue, and dyspnea were more prevalent in severe patients, while comorbidities such as hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer were more common in severe cases compared to non-severe ones. Future studies with robust methodology from diverse populations are strongly recommended.

Mehrdad Sahranavard et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed cardiac complications in COVID-19 patients, finding pooled incidence rates of 10.11% for arrhythmia, 17.85% for myocardial injury, and 22.34% for heart failure. The pooled level of unadjusted cTnI was significantly higher in expired cases compared with surviving cases.

A meta-analysis on the role of pre-existing chronic disease in the cardiac complications of SARS-CoV-2 infection

Jane E. Sinclair et al.

Summary: Research suggests that patients with comorbidities such as chronic respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and male sex are at higher risk of developing cardiovascular complications when infected with SARS-CoV-2. These findings underscore the need for a multidisciplinary approach to managing patients with chronic diseases.

Cardiovascular complications of SARS-CoV-2 infection (COVID-19): a systematic review and meta-analysis

Yu-Hao Zhao et al.

Summary: The most common cardiovascular complications in COVID-19 patients were myocardial injury and arrhythmia, with higher incidence in non-survivors. Heart failure and cardiac injury were more common in patients who died, regardless of a history of cardiovascular disease. Monitoring of cardiac reactions in COVID-19 patients is crucial for optimal care.
