Particle breakage in granular soils: a review

Fangwei Yu

Summary: This paper reviews the phenomenon of particle breakage in granular soils, including measurement, fundamentals, soil mechanics, and theoretical models. Particle breakage affects the mechanical properties of soils, making soil more contractive and significantly influencing shearing, dilatancy, and state behavior.

Shear behaviours of cohesionless mixed soils using the DEM: The influence of coarse particle shape

Yangui Zhu et al.

Summary: The study found that a decrease in the roundness of coarse particles can increase the peak friction angle and critical friction angle of cohesionless mixed soils. It was also discovered that the roundness of coarse particles hardly affects the classification of cohesionless mixed soils, and that the main forms of coarse-coarse contacts were discovered when these soils change to an interactive-underfilled structure at the critical state.

Effect of particle type on the shear behaviour of granular materials

Shunkai Liu et al.

Summary: In DEM simulations, different particle types show variations in critical and peak friction angles, with normal contact anisotropy (an) and normal contact force anisotropy (ac) playing key roles in shear strength. The subtle differences in an and ac between CT and MS ellipsoids contribute to their differences in shear strength despite similar contact orientations.
